Trkiye warns of regional escalation after Iran's retaliation against Israel
Trkiye warned Sunday of a possible regional war after Iran's nighttime airborne attack on Israel, in retaliation for an April 1 airstrike on its diplomatic facilities in the Syrian capital that killed several military commanders.
“We have long reminded all our counterparts of our warnings that Israel's war in Gaza carries a risk of spread and escalation,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“The Israeli attack on the Iranian Embassy in Damascus, which was contrary to international law, justified our concerns. Iran's retaliation against this attack and subsequent developments showed once again that events can quickly turn into a regional war,” added the ministry.
Stating that Turkish officials held talks with their Iranian and American counterparts to call for moderation, the ministry said Trkiye “clearly conveys our messages to Iranian officials and Western countries that have influence over Israel, calling for an end to climbing “.
“We will continue our efforts to prevent a process that would permanently undermine the stability of our region and provoke greater conflicts at the global level,” the ministry said, adding that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is “regularly informed” of the latest developments.
