Sharad Pawar alleges PM Narendra Modi is trying to create fear, imitating Vladimir Putin

NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar on Monday claimed that former prime ministers had worked towards creating a new India, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi is content to criticize others and does not talk about what his government has done for the people over the last ten years.

Addressing an election rally in Amravati for a Maha Vikas Aghadi candidate, Mr. Pawar said former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru's contribution to the country could not be questioned.

He claimed that some BJP leaders had spoken publicly about amending the Constitution and appealed to the people not to allow autocracy to take shape in India.

A high-profile election battle is brewing in the Amravati Lok Sabha constituency, where the BJP has fielded Navneet Rana, the sitting MP who won the 2019 elections as an independent candidate, against Congress' Balwant Wankhede.

Mr. Pawar alleged that Prime Minister Modi was trying to spread fear and imitate Russian President Vladamir Putin.

Mr Pawar said he had come to apologize to the people of Amravati for the “mistake” he had committed in the 2019 elections by supporting the candidate (Navneet Rana).

“In the last elections, I had sought people's support and appealed (to elect Rana). People elected the candidate for whom I had appealed. The time has come to correct this mistake,” a- he declared.

Wankhede, who belongs to the Congress, is contesting the elections as a candidate of the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar) and Congress.

“After Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, I have seen the work of almost all the Prime Ministers, from Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao to Manmohan Singh.
