Pakistani court bars Imran Khan and his wife from criticizing state institutions and officials

According to The Express Tribune, an accountability court in Islamabad has barred former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, from making statements against state institutions and officials. While hearing a fair trial petition, Justice Basir Javed Rana ordered the PTI founder and his wife to refrain from criticizing state institutions in the courtroom.

The court also asked the media to avoid publishing politically provocative statements targeting state institutions and their officials. As per the court order, Imran Khan, the PTI chief, had earlier made provocative statements against senior officials of state institutions including the army, judiciary and army chief.

“Such statements disrupt judicial decorum and also interfere with judicial functions such as administration of justice,” the order added.

The court order also ordered the prosecution, defendants and their defense attorneys to refrain from making political or inflammatory statements that could disrupt the decorum of the court.

Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, remains incarcerated in several cases, including one in which he and his wife were sentenced to 14 years in prison for illegally selling state gifts.

Khan was initially imprisoned after being sentenced to three years in prison by the Election Commission in August 2023 for failing to declare assets obtained from the sale of gifts worth over PKR 140 million (501,000 USD) while in the possession of the State and received during its mandate. mandate of Prime Minister.
