Erdogan renews efforts to restore relations with Syria, broken for more than ten years
ISTANBUL Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reiterated his desire to restore relations with Syria and issued an invitation on Sunday to return relations “to the way they were in the past.”
More than a dozen years ago, diplomatic relations between Ankara and Damascus were severed when protests escalated into civil war in Syria. Turkey backed armed opposition groups in the northwest of the country that sought to overthrow Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Before that, Erdogan and Assad had close ties, even vacationing together with their families in southern Turkey in 2008. Last week, both indicated they were ready to end tensions and normalize diplomatic relations.
“Yesterday we were not enemies of Syria. We met Assad as a family,” Erdogan told reporters on Sunday on a flight from Berlin, where he attended Turkey's quarter-final match against the Netherlands at the European Football Championship.
“There is talk of mediation everywhere, so why not on our border?” Erdogan added, according to the official Anadolu news agency.
The move comes as the Turkish government faces increased pressure to repatriate millions of Syrian refugees amid a deep economic crisis and rising anti-refugee sentiment.
A week ago, anti-Syrian riots broke out in Kayseri, central Turkey, after a Syrian refugee allegedly sexually harassed a 7-year-old Syrian girl. Residents of Melikgazi overturned cars and set fire to shops, calling on Syrians to leave the country.
Last year, the Turkish and Syrian foreign ministers met in Moscow alongside their Russian and Iranian counterparts, marking the highest level of contact between Ankara and Damascus since the start of the Syrian war. But those talks and an earlier meeting between the two countries' defense ministers failed to bear fruit.
Signs of détente between Erdogan and Assad, including plans to open a crossing between areas controlled by the Syrian government and those controlled by opposition groups in Aleppo province, have led to rising tensions in cities controlled by the Turkish-backed opposition.
The Idlib-based Salvation Government, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an insurgent group formerly linked to al-Qaeda that controls other areas of northwest Syria, issued a statement on July 1 calling on Turkey to assume its legal and moral responsibilities to protect Syrian refugees.
