In the polls, what is Kamala Harris' opinion of Donald Trump?

Before President Biden announced he would end his reelection campaign and endorse Vice President Harris, recent polls that were conducted after his disastrous debate performance showed little difference between how he fared against former President Trump and how Harris fared.

According to the New York Times, Harris is about two percentage points behind Trump in recent polls. The 46% to 48% gap is slightly better for Harris than Biden's polling average, which is three percentage points behind the Republican presidential nominee, 47% to 44%.

A New York Times-Siena College poll conducted July 9-11 in key swing state Pennsylvania, before Biden's withdrawal and the assassination attempt on Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, showed Harris trailing by just one percentage point in a hypothetical matchup against Trump.

In Virginia, Harris has a five-percentage-point lead, while Biden trails by a razor-thin margin in the same state, according to the Times. Harris performed slightly better than Biden in both states among black voters, young voters and women.

According to a Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll conducted July 5-9, 70% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents said they would be “satisfied” if Biden withdrew from the race and Harris were nominated to run as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee.

In an open-ended question, the poll showed that 29% of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents named Harris as their choice for the Democratic nomination if Biden withdraws.

New Poll Reveals What Democrats Think of Harris as President

Seven percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents pointed to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, while 4% said they wanted former first lady Michelle Obama to replace Biden. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer each got 3% of the vote, though half of Democrats did not specify an alternative candidate.

As Democratic lawmakers and donors push for Biden to step aside, an AP-NORC Public Affairs Research Center poll released last week found that about six in 10 Democrats think Harris would do a good job as president. About two in 10 Democrats don’t believe she would, and another two in 10 say they don’t know enough to say.

A CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released July 2 found that three-quarters of voters believe the Democratic Party would have a better chance of retaining the White House if someone other than Biden were in charge. In a head-to-head scenario, 47% of registered voters supported Trump and 45% supported Harris, a difference that is within the poll’s margin of error.
