Trump shooting attacker fired 8 shots in less than 6 seconds before being killed, analysis finds

The gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally fired eight bullets in less than six seconds before being shot dead by a U.S. Secret Service sniper, according to an analysis of footage of the event by two audio experts, a video analysis by CBS News and affidavits from Pennsylvania State Police.

The gunman, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, killed one rallygoer and wounded two others when he opened fire from a rooftop near the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13. A bullet also grazed Trump's ear, creating a 2-inch-wide wound, according to Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump's former White House physician.

Testifying Tuesday before the House Homeland Security Committee about the assassination attempt, Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher L. Paris told lawmakers that eight shell casings were recovered from the shooter's location.

Video and audio analysis of the shooting indicate that the shooter fired eight shots. Audio experts Rob Maher of Montana State University and Steven Beck of Beck Audio Forensics told CBS News they identified 10 shots from recordings of the event. The first eight rounds had similar acoustic characteristics and came from the same location. Beck said those eight shots, fired in about 5.2 seconds, were consistent with the AR-15-style rifle the shooter used.

The final two shots likely came from law enforcement and came from two different guns at two different locations, according to audio analysis. The first of those two shots was fired about 5.5 seconds after the shooter opened fire, Beck said. The shooter immediately stopped firing, indicating the bullet had struck him. A final shot was fired 10 seconds later.

CBS News' analysis of social media footage showed that one of the rally attendees injured in the shooting, David Dutch, fell to the ground in the stands after the second shot. Another injured attendee, James Copenhaver, fell to the ground when the fourth through eighth shots were fired.

Cory Comperatore, a 50-year-old retired fire chief, was killed while trying to protect his family from gunfire, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said at a news conference after the shooting.

On Tuesday, Kimberly Cheatle resigned as director of the U.S. Secret Service after being questioned on Capitol Hill Monday. President Biden thanked Cheatle for her decades of public service in a statement from the White House.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has named Ronald Rowe, deputy director of the Secret Service, to serve as acting director until a permanent replacement is chosen.

There are several ongoing investigations into the circumstances of the shooting. In addition to the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general has opened two investigations to assess the Secret Service's process for securing an event and to determine how prepared the agency's counter-sniper team is to respond to threats. Officials said the inspector general may also decide to open additional investigations.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries announced Tuesday the creation of a bipartisan task force to investigate the assassination attempt.

Mr Biden also ordered an independent review of the security situation at the rally to determine what happened.
