'Political parties can bring unity, not the military': Imran Khan

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan has asserted that only political parties can unite the people, not the army.

“If the army could have united the people, East Pakistan would not have broken up,” he remarked.

Imran stressed that PTI is the only party that can bring the nation together.

In an informal conversation with reporters at Adiala Jail on Friday, Imran expressed concern over the country's economic situation, describing it as the biggest challenge facing Pakistan.

“I heard that investment in the country was at its lowest level in 50 years, but now I hear that this year it is at its lowest level in history.”

“The nation's revenues are declining, debts are increasing and the country is heading towards destruction,” he said, blaming the deteriorating economic situation on political instability and rising terrorism.

Imran criticized the February elections, calling them fraudulent and responsible for the current political instability.

“On the one hand, they accuse us of being responsible for the rise of terrorism because of our colonization projects, and now they claim that it is due to cross-border terrorism,” he said.

He wondered who would invest in a country plagued by TTP terrorism, Kacha criminals and insurgency in Balochistan while secret agencies are focused on dismantling PTI.

Imran warned of the growing threat of provincialism in Pakistan, citing protests in Punjab against terrorism in Balochistan.

“PTI is the only federal party, others are regional. If PML-N and PPP stop doing their jobs, they will be finished,” he noted, adding that PTI is the only party present in all four provinces and capable of unifying the nation.

He expressed concern that the country's only federal party was being weakened.

“Those who take these decisions do not care about the country. Considering the current situation in Balochistan, our efforts should be aimed at rallying the Baloch people,” he said.

Imran also spoke about the recent postponement of the Islamabad rally, stressing that it had angered party workers.

“Other parties are holding rallies, but we have not been allowed to hold a single one. We postponed the rally out of concern for the nation, to avoid further chaos,” he said.

He made it clear that there was no place in PTI for those who left the party during difficult times.

“I know who abandoned us in difficult times. Very few of them left the party out of necessity. Those who were active in good times but left in difficult times have no place among us,” Imran said.

Imran also indicated that he would not easily take back those who left the party.

“I will not name anyone, but those who simply left the party will not be taken back. On the other hand, those who endured difficulties and remained loyal will have a better decision taken in their favor,” he assured.

Imran criticised the lack of a fair trial in his case, saying: “A fair trial is my right, but here it is being torn to shreds.”

“The worse the situation gets, the harsher the conditions become. I am not allowed to meet with party leaders or lawyers, and I haven't even spoken to my children on the phone for three weeks.”

During the press conference, prison officials prevented journalists from asking Imran questions.

When Imran objected, the deputy prison director replied: “There is a court order prohibiting holding a press conference or speaking to the media.”
