Prime Minister Lawrence Wong meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Apec summit in Peru
LIMA Prime Minister Lawrence Wong met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on November 15 in Lima, Peru.
The 20-minute meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit, is the first between the two leaders since Prime Minister Wong took office in May 2024.
Addressing Mr. Xi at the start of their meeting, Prime Minister Wong said: “I am very happy to have the chance to meet you for the first time.
Prime Minister Wong said relations between the two countries were in excellent shape, especially after the official strengthening of bilateral relations in April 2023. Singapore and China now enjoy what is known as a high-quality comprehensive partnership and looking to the future.
Since then, our relations have continued to experience very positive dynamics, he added.
Economically, China is Singapore's largest trading partner and Singapore is China's largest foreign direct investor, noted Prime Minister Wong.
The two countries also have high-level exchanges, such as the Joint Bilateral Cooperation Council (JCBC) meetings. At the JCBC meeting on November 11, the two sides announced 25 memorandums of understanding and agreements in areas ranging from China's Belt and Road Initiative to trade, investment and finance.
Prime Minister Wong said he looks forward to working with Xi to further strengthen cooperation and take relations between the two countries to greater heights.
Xi said Singapore and China are friendly neighbors and important partners.
