Trump says he doesn’t need Xi’s help in Iran war as he visits China | Xi Jinping News

US President Donald Trump said he did not need China’s help to end the war with Iran as he left Washington for Beijing, where he is expected to make a state visit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump said, “I don’t think we need any help with Iran” and said the United States would win the war “one way or another.”

Trump’s three-day visit to Beijing comes at a difficult time for the US president.

His popularity has been weighed down by the protracted war with Iran and a surge in inflation, which economists attribute in part to the disruption of global energy supplies.

The war has closed the Strait of Hormuz – through which about a fifth of the world’s oil supply previously passed – blocking tankers and causing energy prices to rise to levels that could sabotage global economic growth.

Trump has given mixed signals about the central place Iran would occupy in his discussions with Xi.

“We’re going to discuss it at length. I think he’s been relatively good, to be honest with you,” Trump said before boarding Air Force One. A few minutes later, he appeared to backtrack.

“We have a lot of things to discuss. I wouldn’t say Iran is one of them, to be honest with you, because we have Iran under control.”

He added that American financial difficulties had not been a factor in his decision-making in negotiations to end the war in Iran.

“I don’t think about the financial situation of Americans. I don’t think about anyone,” he said. “I think one thing: we can’t let Iran have nuclear weapons. That’s it. That’s the only thing that motivates me.”

Trade will grow

Trump will arrive in China on Wednesday evening and, after a greeting ceremony, will head to his hotel. He will attend a state banquet on Thursday and have a working lunch with Xi on Friday, before returning to the United States.

The meetings will be the first face-to-face exchanges since the leaders of the world’s two largest economies met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Busan, South Korea, in October 2025.

This is Trump’s second visit to China as president, and the first time since his second term began on January 20, 2025.

Xi is expected to visit the United States later this year.

Trump is seeking to win in Beijing by signing deals with China to buy more American food and planes, saying he will discuss trade with Xi “more than anything else.”

Highlighting the initiative, Trump invited a number of American business leaders to accompany him on his trip, including Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The Trump administration hopes to begin the process of creating a “Board of Trade” with China to address disputes between the countries.

The council could help prevent the trade war sparked last year after Trump raised tariffs, which China countered by tightening export controls on rare earth minerals. This led to a year-long truce last October.

The status of Taiwan also appears to be a major topic, with Beijing unhappy with U.S. plans to sell arms to the self-governing island that China claims as part of its territory.

Trump told reporters Monday that he would discuss an authorized $11 billion arms package for Taiwan with Xi.

At the same time, Taiwan, as the world’s top chipmaker, has become critical to AI development, with the United States having imported more goods from Taiwan so far this year than from China.

Trump was already describing the trip as a success before leaving the White House.

He openly discussed Xi’s planned reciprocal visit to the United States, lamenting that construction of the White House ballroom was not completed on time.

“We’re going to have a great relationship for many decades to come,” Trump said of the United States and China. “As you know, President Xi will be coming here towards the end of the year. So that would be exciting. I just wish the ballroom was finished.”

Iran-US negotiations at an impasse

Trump’s visit to Beijing comes days after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited the Chinese capital. Despite Trump’s claims that he does not need China’s help, senior U.S. officials have pressured Beijing to exert influence over Tehran.

China remains Iran’s largest oil buyer and has maintained ties with Tehran throughout the conflict, while largely avoiding direct involvement.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have publicly called on China in recent days to use its ties with Iran to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump administration officials said Tuesday that senior U.S. and Chinese officials agreed last month that neither country should be able to impose tolls on water traffic, aiming to project consensus on the issue ahead of the visit to Beijing.

The US Treasury has also imposed successive rounds of sanctions on Chinese companies accused of trading with Iran in violation of US restrictions.

Beijing criticized the move and ordered its companies to ignore the sanctions.

Tensions also flared last month, when Trump threatened to impose a 50% tariff on China after reports that Beijing was preparing to deliver air defense systems to Tehran. He later withdrew his threat, saying he had received written assurances from Xi that no weapons would be provided.

Days later, Trump said the U.S. Navy had intercepted a Chinese ship carrying what he described as a “gift” to Iran, without elaborating.

Peace negotiations between Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked.

The United States demands an end to Iran’s nuclear program and the lifting of restrictions on the strait.

Iran responded by calling for war reparations, an end to the U.S. naval blockade of its ports and a ceasefire on all fronts, including in Lebanon, where U.S. ally Israel is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah.

On Monday, Trump called Iran’s conditions “waste.”
