President Trump ordered the reflecting pool outside the Lincoln Memorial to be painted “American flag blue” after calling the location “disgusting.”

President Donald Trump said the World War II memorial on the National Mall could be the next Washington, D.C., landmark to get a facelift under his administration.

After initiating a renovation of the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, Trump said during a May 27 Cabinet meeting that he was considering something similar for the World War II memorial’s fountain.

“Now we’re looking at the World War II fountain, because it’s also in pretty bad shape basically,” Trump said.

Criticizing the appearance of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, Trump had it drained, resurfaced and painted “the blue of the American flag.” He said the same thing could happen with the World War II Memorial Fountain.

“We’ll replicate it, I think, maybe with a slightly different color actually, we’ll go with a lighter color,” Trump said.

The real estate developer turned president moved quickly during his second term to put his stamp not only on politics, but also on the physical landscape of Washington, DC. Among the projects: demolishing the East Wing of the White House to build a new ballroom, closing the Kennedy Center for two years for a $200 million renovation and building a new 250-foot “triumph arch” on Memorial Circle near Arlington National Cemetery.

While Trump has touted the projects as much-needed improvements, they have sparked legal challenges, backlash from historic advocates and criticism over a lack of public participation.

The Cultural Landscape Foundation, a nonprofit organization, is suing over the application of blue paint to the Lincoln Memorial’s reflecting pool, saying in a press release that “altering the color of the reflecting pool, a key character-defining element of the site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, should be subject to reviews…under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and other laws.” »

Trump said May 27 that his redesign of the reflecting pool would be completed before July 4, when the nation will mark the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

Located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial contains a large fountain surrounded by bronze bas-relief panels containing information about the war, granite columns representing each U.S. state and territory, two large “victory pavilions” and a wall of gold stars, according to the National Park Service.
