Turkish court ousts leader of main opposition party
A court in Turkey has annulled the 2023 leadership election of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) in a sharp escalation against the country’s embattled opposition.
It is the latest in a series of measures targeting the CHP, Turkey’s oldest political faction which won a huge victory over President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AK Party in 2024 local elections and is rising in the polls.
Thursday’s ruling overturned the result of a leadership election that went to current party leader Ozgur Ozel, with the court appointing former party chairman Kemal Kilicdaroglu – who lost the election to Ozel – as interim leader.
The case has been seen as a test of Turkey’s fragile balance between democracy and increasingly centralized power, and the decision could plunge the opposition into even greater disarray and possible internal strife. It could also boost Erdogan’s chances of extending his more than two-decade rule over the large NATO member country and one of the major emerging market economies.
The CHP rejected the move, calling it an “attempted coup”, while the government – which denies criticism that it is using the courts to target political opponents – said it had renewed Turks’ faith in the rule of law.
The secular and centrist CHP is running roughly tied with Erdogan’s conservative, Islamic-rooted AK Party in the polls. It is also facing an unprecedented legal crackdown since 2024, during which hundreds of its members and elected officials have been arrested on corruption charges that the party denies.
Among those imprisoned for more than a year is Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, Erdogan’s main rival and the CHP’s official candidate in the presidential election scheduled for 2028, but which could take place next year.
Ozel, the combative CHP president who has risen to prominence since Imamoglu’s arrest, summoned party leaders to discuss a response to the court ruling as protests were planned.
Ali Mahir Basarir, deputy chairman of the CHP parliamentary group, told the Reuters news agency that the move “is an attempted coup carried out through the judicial system.” [and] a blow against the will of 86 million people.” Those behind this project “will be held accountable in court,” he said.
Turkey’s Istanbul Stock Exchange .XU100 fell 6 percent in response, triggering a market-wide circuit breaker, while government bonds slipped.
The central bank sold billions of dollars of foreign exchange to mitigate the impact, four traders said.
In March last year, Imamoglu’s holding sparked a sell-off that raised inflation expectations and temporarily reversed a rate-cutting cycle. Investors said the latest political unrest would be monitored for similar risks.
The Ankara court’s decision overturned a ruling last year by a lower court that said the case surrounding the CHP’s 2023 congress had no basis.
The pro-Kurdish DEM (Party for People’s Equality and Democracy), the third party in parliament, called the court’s decision a “black stain” on Turkish democracy.
Reinstated CHP leader Kilicdaroglu, who had largely disappeared from public view since his electoral defeat three years ago, called for calm and common sense, saying he hoped Turkey would benefit.
