Trump praises PM Modi at US independence event in Delhi
New Delhi, May 24 (PTI) India can count on me 100 per cent, US President Donald Trump said on Sunday evening, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “great” friend at an event celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The event at the Bharat Mandapam was graced by Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador Sergio Gor.
The highlight of the event was a performance by AR Rahman.
“I just want to say hello to everyone. I love the prime minister, (Narendra) Modi is great, he’s my friend and I just want to wish everyone a very good evening,” Trump said in a telephone conversation with Gor.
“I am a big fan of Prime Minister Modi,” he said.
The US ambassador held his phone up to a microphone so the audience could hear Trump’s remarks.
“We have never been closer to India and India can count on me and our country 100 percent,” the US president said. “If they need help, they know where to call: they call here.” Trump also said the U.S. economy was doing well.
“We’re doing well, we’re setting records. We have a record economy, a record stock market,” he said.
The highlight of the evening was Rahman’s performance as he sang hits like ‘Dil Se’, ‘Maa Tujhe Salaam’ and ‘Tere Bina’.
In his remarks, Trump also described Rubio as the “greatest secretary of state in American history” and concluded by saying, “Say hello to Prime Minister Modi and let him know I’m a big fan.” In his brief speech, Rubio described India as a key partner of the United States.
Jaishankar said the American Declaration of Independence expressed ideas that have shaped the modern world, such as individual liberty, the rule of law, freedom of expression and responsible governance, and their resonance in India was natural given the country’s history as a pluralistic society with a consultative philosophy.
The experiences of the American independence movement were taken into account by the framers of the Indian Constitution and affinities between the two sides grew through deeper economic and technological ties, Jaishankar said.
The common features of political democracies, market economies and open societies were reinforced by a convergence of national interests, which allowed both sides to overcome “hesitations of history”, the foreign minister said.
The Indian diaspora in the United States has helped strengthen political understanding between the two countries, he noted.
Jaishankar argues that the world is going through an era of transition and advocates for stronger relations between India and the United States.
“Both countries have a common interest in reducing risks to the global economy and providing the world with more choices,” he said.
Rubio’s birthday was also celebrated and the evening was capped off by a performance by the American group Village People. PTI
