Achakzai warns against PTI exit from assemblies

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and Tehreek Tahaffuz Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chief Mehmood Khan Achakzai on Monday signaled a potential political escalation, warning that the opposition alliance could walk away from parliamentary forums if what he called the continued harsh treatment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan persists.

Speaking to a private news channel, he warned that the situation in Parliament was reaching breaking point.

“I fear that if the current attitude towards Imran Khan continues, we will not be able to remain in the Assembly.”

He questioned the legal and political basis for the prosecution of the former prime minister.

“What’s wrong with him? [Imran] do? Did he commit murder, while you threatened to impose a 50-year prison sentence on him? He only said that the mandate that had been taken from him had to be returned to him. But you said that a sentence of 50 years in prison could be announced.”

He further criticized the idea of ​​trying the former prime minister in a military court, clearly asking: “You want to try him in a military court. Tell me if he is a general or a colonel,” Achakzai said.

Linking political impasse to parliamentary functioning, he argued that legislatures had become ineffective if even basic access to the imprisoned leader was not possible. He also indicated that the idea of ​​a boycott was no longer hypothetical.

“If the PTI central committee suggests leaving the Punjab, Sindh and Central assemblies, and only running the government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it will be implemented,” he said.

Asked if he was expecting such a proposal from the PTI central leadership, Achakzai said the possibility was already visible.

Asked if he feared that the PTI central committee would suggest withdrawing from the assemblies, Achakzai said: “I am not afraid of it, I see it coming.”

He added that the opposition found itself with increasingly limited political space, making the withdrawal of legislative bodies seem less of a choice and more of an inevitability.

He said the opposition had no other choice and therefore it was not a question whether withdrawing from the assemblies would be a good or bad thing.

“We will have no choice but to withdraw from parliamentary assemblies and committees.”

He also highlighted a deep contradiction in the country’s justice system, calling for selective accountability.

He claimed that “criminals and murderers are free” in the country, while Imran was kept in prison.

Achakzai argued that the government itself was contributing to the push for an opposition boycott, warning of arithmetic consequences if PTI lawmakers opted out of the system.

“There are 50-60 PTI seats in the assembly. What will you do if PTI withdraws?” he asked.
