Britain continues to experience heatwave conditions after a weekend of unprecedentedly high temperatures.
The record for the lowest temperature in May was broken for the second day in a row on Monday, and Tuesday is expected to be even hotter.
Britain also recorded its provisional hottest spring weather on record on Monday, with Kew Gardens, south-west London, hitting 34.8C.
The Met Office said highs of 35 degrees Celsius were expected across southern England and Wales on Tuesday, with temperatures possibly reaching 36 degrees.
Dan Suri, Chief Operating Meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “What we have seen is that the impact of the warmth coming from the high pressure area near the UK is causing exceptional heat, with high and low temperatures reaching levels not previously reported for this time of year.
“More heat is forecast for most of England and Wales, with similar temperatures expected on Tuesday. High pressure is expected to gradually lose its influence later in the week, but maximum temperatures will still remain in the high 30s for part of the week and low 20s later in the week.”

A heatwave has been officially declared in eight regions of south-east England, with temperatures reaching 27C for the third day in a row.
Yellow heat warnings are in place for the East Midlands, West Midlands, East England, London and the South East.
Officials have warned that hot weather could have serious impacts across health and social care services.
How long is the heat wave expected to last?
The Met Office predicted the heatwave could be bigger than initially expected, with highs reaching 35C in London on Tuesday.
The Meteorological Administration predicts that the heat will continue all week, with temperatures reaching 31 degrees on Wednesday, 30 degrees on Thursday, 27 degrees on Friday, and 28 degrees on Saturday.
Here’s what the Met Office predicts for the next few days.
tuesday
Another sunny and very hot day across most of England and Wales. Clear weather makes the northern regions fresher. Thundershowers could develop across England and Wales later in the afternoon, with some heavy downpours possible.
wednesday
A dry Wednesday with sunny skies for many. It’s cloudier in the northeast, but some bright spells are slowly developing. It’s very warm in the southwest, but feels cooler elsewhere.
Thursday to Saturday
Heat will remain across parts of the South over the next few days. There is a risk of occasional thundershowers, but it is generally dry.
