Regarding “Ohio Republicans Are Not the Racists Democrats Want You to Believe We Are” by Will Hinman, May 21: In fact, Democrats want to believe that Ohio Republican officials are not the racists they really are. We hope that our Republican leaders might once again be the race bullies they have been since 1968, the year a cloven-hoofed Nixon-Atwater-Buchanan team divided the country along racial lines with a “Southern Strategy.”

Republican leaders have downplayed President Donald Trump’s racism for a decade.

But the last Confederate president has: red-lined black homebuyers; he demanded Obama’s birth certificate; pursued the innocent Central Park Five; ordered budget cuts to Project 2025 (racially and class-deadly) and even deadlier cuts to USAID; killed at least 191 people on the high seas for no reason; targeted nonviolent minorities in immigration campaigns; attacked Somali immigrants, including citizens; urged midterm gerrymanders aimed at black officials; and directed his Justice Department to criminally charge a human rights group for infiltrating white supremacist groups, although the group worked with the DOJ during Trump’s first term.

We must also fight against murder, corruption, electoral interference and sex traffickers, but racism must not be lost among the other failures that Trump embodies.

Hinman should vote for Democrats until the Republican Party sheds its Trump kneepads. Racism isn’t his party’s only problem, but it’s a big one, despite the whiny distractions and distractions.

Huffman’s smoky back rooms

Re “Can the new governor make up for the lack of experience?” » May 17: Columnist Tom Suddes highlights the fundamental problem but only describes the tip of the Huffman iceberg.

Ohio House Speaker Matt Huffman has successfully consolidated, expanded, and maintained power through manipulation and circumvention of the law, ignoring the will of voters, and outright deception.

When voters overwhelmingly approved constitutional amendments to eliminate gerrymandering, Huffman helped lead Republican efforts to thwart their vote.

He then backed a failed GOP effort that would have eliminated any possibility of a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment by requiring 60 percent voter approval.

And he played a major role in the deceptive campaign to defeat the latest anti-gerrymandering amendment.

Finally, after serving as president of the state Senate, Huffman circumvented term limits in 2024 by seeking a House seat where he could continue to be a dominant political figure.

All of these things were done in public view. One can only imagine what he did in the “smoky back room.”

So, as Suddes points out, after a costly and brutal election campaign, the battle will not be over for the next governor. To accomplish anything, the winner must be willing to deal with Ohio’s truly great power broker, who has shown he will do almost anything to get what he wants.

The smoke screen is gone

The United Nations General Assembly voted 141-8 on May 20 in favor of an opinion from a global court saying countries have a legal obligation to fight climate change. Unsurprisingly, the United States voted against it. We were in the company of Saudi Arabia, Russia, Israel, Iran, Yemen, Liberia and Belarus.

Even though the United States is the largest historical emitter of carbon, we refuse to accept any responsibility for the suffering inflicted on so many other countries. Island states and many developing countries have been devastated by rising sea levels, deforestation, disruption of fisheries and heat. These problems are far more destructive to them than to the United States and other major economies. Many innocent countries will suffer because this administration has no desire to participate in any effort to promote environmental justice.

That’s what “America First” means to President Donald Trump’s administration.

His ultranationalism leaves no room for compassion or justice. It seems that a president who only cares about himself is determined to shape a country that only cares about himself. The Trump administration has abandoned any pretense of being a model of justice, peace and democracy.

Regarding “Listen to the Middle,” May 23: The letter writer used the phrase “Democrats are hostages to far-left progressives.” I hear this topic of discussion all the time from those who consider themselves moderate or centrist. How exactly is the Democratic Party hostage to the far left? Does anyone saying this know the party program?

The 2024 platform is really easy to find and features all kinds of really “far left” things like securing the borders, lowering taxes for working families, lowering energy costs, lowering grocery costs, strengthening domestic manufacturing, fighting hate, and protecting religious freedom. Remember, Democrats under President Joe Biden were poised to pass one of the most restrictive immigration bills in history. There are many reasons why today’s Democratic Party is disappointing (to put it mildly), but being “held hostage by the far left” is not one of them. Civil discourse begins with knowing what each party’s platform ACTUALLY SAYS.

No money for traitors

On January 6, 2021, we Americans were calling and texting each other asking, “Do you see what’s happening at the Capitol? We, the citizens, are the ones who were traumatized by seeing traitors and insurrectionists attack Capitol Police officers with poles and douse them with bear spray to enter the Capitol and prevent the certification of a US election.

President Donald Trump now wants to further reward these traitors by giving them our tax dollars as compensation for their treasonous acts. It’s incredible. This seems to be paying them for what he asked them to do. Does our president support the insurgents? Are our senators doing it?

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want a single cent of my taxes to go to traitors. The people we should be rewarding are the Capitol Police officers and staff who were in the building on January 6, 2021.

They are America’s heroes.
