US judge orders Trump’s name removed from Kennedy Center

Washington, May 30 A US district judge has ruled that the addition of US President Donald Trump’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was illegal and ordered its removal within two weeks.

Judge Christopher Cooper of the federal court in Washington wrote that the US Congress had ordered the Center to be “the only national memorial” dedicated to the 35th President John F. Kennedy in the city of Washington and its surrounding areas, Xinhua reported.

The judge noted that the Kennedy Center board exceeded its authority by unilaterally renaming the center in honor of Trump.

“The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes it clear that the Center must be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other official or public memorial name based on the unilateral decision of the Board of Trustees. Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it,” Cooper said.

Cooper also temporarily blocked the Trump administration from closing the Kennedy Center for two years.

It said the board’s decision to terminate operations was based on “insufficient and one-sided presentation of information and neglected to take into account its full statutory obligations and the potential negative consequences of the closure on programming and commemorative functions.”

“The preliminary injunction will not prevent the Center from moving forward with its planned capital repair work, which the record demonstrates is sorely needed. Nor will it categorically prohibit the Board of Trustees from closing the Center should it make that decision again after independently and prudently balancing its multiple obligations to the Center,” the judge added.

Since taking office for the second time, Trump has taken a very active role at the Kennedy Center, ousting previous leaders and installing himself as chairman of the board.

In December, the board voted to rename the venue “The Donald J. Trump and The John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts,” a decision that drew widespread criticism from the public and political leaders. A number of high-profile artists have canceled their performances at the Kennedy Center.

Trump announced in February that the Kennedy Center would cease entertainment operations for about two years starting in July to allow for construction.

The center is widely considered the national cultural center of the United States, hosting world-class performances in music, opera, theater, dance and other performing arts.
