KP Information Minister condemns PTI leader’s arrest in Britain

Peshawar – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Information and Public Relations Shafi Jan has strongly condemned the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chairman Junaid Akbar Khan and other party legislators in Gilgit-Baltistan.

In a statement issued here, the minister termed the action of the Gilgit-Baltistan government as an illegal move and a blatant example of political victimization. He said the arrest of elected officials went against democratic norms and was a direct insult to public mandate.

Shafi Jan said that participating in election campaign is a constitutional, legal and democratic right of any political party. He, however, regretted that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was being denied even this fundamental democratic right. He said that while other political parties are allowed to campaign freely in Gilgit-Baltistan, only Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf is being deliberately targeted and hampered. He wondered what the Gilgit-Baltistan government feared, which resorted to arresting elected representatives.

The minister said such undemocratic tactics cannot weaken the resolve of PTI leaders and workers. Despite political pressure and reprisals, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf will continue its fight with the support of the population.

Shafi Jan said the government now feared Imran Khan’s popularity among the public and hence had adopted pre-poll retaliatory measures and undemocratic tactics. He added that the people of Gilgit-Baltistan would reject the politics of revenge through the power of their vote and once again prove their support to Imran Khan by ensuring a decisive victory for the PTI candidates.
