The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, on Saturday May 30, 2026, accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of “destroying” the Indian education system. The government could not even conduct an exam properly, but presented itself as a “vishwaguru”, Mr Gandhi said, adding that the generation “whose future is being ruined” by the Narendra Modi government would hold him accountable.

His remarks followed reports of delays by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in conducting the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-Undergraduate (UG) at some centers due to technical glitches.

“NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test), CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education), SSC (Staff Selection Commission) and today, CUET. Four exams. One crore students. Not a single one could be conducted honestly,” Mr Gandhi said. “Calling himself ‘vishwaguru’ but unable to conduct even a single exam in the country, Modi Ji completely destroyed the entire education system,” Mr. Gandhi said.

“The very generation whose future you are ruining, the same generation will hold you responsible,” the Congress leader said.

Citing two investigations, one by a Class 12 student and the other by a leading newspaper, Congress communications chief Jairam Ramesh has intensified the party’s attack on the Union government over the introduction of On-Screen Marking (OSM) system for Class 12 board exams, demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

Mr. Ramesh questioned the CBSE’s “intentions and preparedness” regarding the rollout of the OSM system and posed 10 questions to the government on how it was introduced ahead of the Board exams.

Why did CBSE “rush” the implementation of OSM in the 74 days before the exams, and concerns raised during a “dry run” in five schools in Delhi were allegedly not addressed, Mr. Ramesh said.

The Congress leader also questioned changes to the ‘Request for Proposal’ rules, alleging that eligibility criteria had been diluted to favor COEMPT Edutech, including changes to provisions relating to blacklists, turnover requirements, capacity maturity standards and data center standards.

Why would the CBSE dilute contractual safeguards, including provisions for blacklisting of contractors in case of errors, the Congress leader said.

“It is increasingly clear that a stunning mix of incompetence, corruption and insensitivity was present in the CBSE’s planning and implementation of the Grade 12 board exams,” Mr. Ramesh said, demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the matter and calling for Mr. Pradhan’s resignation.
