Hero Bowl, a charity football game in Delaware County, has canceled its midgame after a fight broke out at Cardinal O’Hara
A typically positive and well-attended charity football game for first responders was abruptly canceled after a large fight broke out at a Delaware County high school Thursday evening.
A spokesperson for Cardinal O’Hara told CBS News Philadelphia that they will no longer host the annual charity game.
The chaos was captured on cellphone video posted online, showing large groups of teenagers throwing punches.
The fight took place in the Hero Bowl at Cardinal O’Hara, which attracted more than 2,500 spectators. A charity football game featuring All-Star football players from several area high schools.
All proceeds will go to the Hero Scholarship Fund for children of first responders who have fallen in the line of duty.
Police say fighting broke out at the foot of the main entrance steps about five minutes into the third quarter.
“This is something everyone looks forward to. A fun crowd. There’s a lot of Pepper Coke and a lot of money raised for it every year, and there are a few bad apples,” said Mike Amalfitano, who has coached the hero bowl for 39 years. “It’s really a tragedy that this is happening because the game is played for such a good cause.”
There were dozens of police officers in the crowd who rushed to help. After the officers broke up the fight, there was an impromptu stampede from the concession stand to the woods, forcing the officials to temporarily stop the game.
Police say after gaining control of the area, a large crowd trickled in behind the south end zone and decided to end the game. There were no arrests or injuries. The score was 18-17.
Although players, coaches and spectators were disappointed, they said they ended the match with a lot of caution.
Because it was likely the last high school football game many of them will ever play, police said parents and players still gathered on the field to have their moment with their sons.
Cardinal O’Hara says they have offered their stadium solely in support of a good cause and that their involvement is limited to making the venue available. They said in part:
“Cardinal O’Hara High School does not condone the behavior that occurred on our campus, and we are deeply disappointed by the actions that occurred. The safety and values of our community remain our top priority.”
Amalfitano says many players were looking forward to the match.
“It was an exciting match, a good match. No problem with the kids and something like that happens,” Amalfitano said.
Although it wasn’t the evening everyone hoped for, it ended safely.
“I can’t thank you enough for all the police officers from dozens of Delco municipalities, the Delco MIRT, the Hero Bowl staff, the coaches and the players there last night who all helped keep things from getting out of hand,” said Marple Township Police Chief Brandon Graeff.
“The police come from all over the district and as soon as that happened, they jumped on it and crushed it. The point is, it should never have happened,” Amalfitano said.
