Burnham as PM would be beaten by Farage in general election, poll suggests

Andy Burnham would be defeated by Reform UK at the next general election if they were to replace him. Sir Keir Starmer as prime minister, a new poll suggests.

A Labor Party with Mayor of Greater Manchester to lead the party would have the support of 20 per cent of voters, two points more than a party led by Sir Keir.

But the poll, conducted by BMG Research, showed the Reform Party would still be three points ahead of a party led by Burnham. Labor Party on 23 percent.

Mr Burnham, as leader of the party, would, however, provide some boost – it would result in a two point drop in support for Reform and the Greens, who had nine points.

But there were also a slightly higher number of voters saying they were unsure or would not vote than those saying the same in a scenario with Sir Keir as leader.

A head-to-head poll cannot determine how voters would vote in a possible general election, where they would also be judged on the basis of their party’s record and manifesto, and where they would vote for a local MP rather than a party leader.

However, the latest poll will be a blow to Mr Burnham’s campaign as he hopes to convince voters he would have a better chance of staving off the Reform threat.

It comes as Mr Burnham attempts to stave off the threat from the right in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, where he is running for Labor in a bid to return to Westminster.

Instead, the Mayor of Greater Manchester should delegate responsibility for finding housing to local authorities.

The latest poll, published for the first time in the I papercontradicts the results of a recent More in Common poll, which suggested Mr Burnham had a good chance of beating Mr Farage in the general election.

Mr Burnham would beat the British Reform leader by 14 percentage points in direct polls, according to More in Common (MIC).

But the MIC also warned that a potentially “dangerous” row within the Labor Party over Brexit could deprive Mr Burnham of his chances of victory at Makerfield.

To try his luck at the Labor leadership, Mr Burnham must first win the parliamentary seat of Makerfield, which voted to leave the EU in 2016 and where the other favorite is the pro-Brexit British Reform Party.

Briefing on last month’s local election results, More in Common’s Luke Tryl said that in a straight head-to-head Mr Burnham would beat Mr Farage by 14 percentage points, although with “a lot of don’t know”.

Mr Burnham also did around 10 points better than Sir Keir against Mr Farage, he said.

Separately, another More in Common poll found Mr Burnham would increase Labor’s support by eight percentage points, putting it above Reform UK, if he took over the party leadership.

That would take Labor to 30 percent overall vote share, ahead of the Reform Party, which has led opinion polls since last fall, on the 27th, and the Conservatives on the 20th, according to the survey of 2,599 people.

BMG surveyed a representative sample of 1,511 UK adults between May 26 and 28.
