Aleema dismisses Imran meeting report as false

Aleema Khan has rubbished social media reports that Imran Khan met a former army chief at Adiala jail. She said the claim was false and that the reports were intended to distract from concerns about his isolation and treatment in custody.

ISLAMABAD: Aleema Khan, sister of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf founder Imran Khan, on Monday dismissed allegations circulating that the former prime minister met a former army chief at Adiala jail, terming the reports as false.

In an article on X, she said that reports shared on social media about such a meeting in the prison were false. Aleema said she verified this claim with PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan’s lawyer, who also said it was false.

Aleema said the story was intended to distract from what she described as Imran Khan’s treatment in custody. She said he was subject to complete isolation and that concerns remained about his eye condition, his inability to speak to his sons, the fact that he had not been provided with books for the past six months and the lack of access to a television in his cell.

Attributing details to Imran Khan’s detention, Aleema said he was not allowed to come into contact with people outside the prison for the last six months, except for two meetings with his lawyer which took place on the court’s orders. She also referenced a court order that, she said, allows weekly meetings of 18 people: six family members and six attorneys on Tuesdays, and six party representatives on Thursdays. She said these were her legal rights under Pakistani law and international law.

The statement followed a discussion on social media over the weekend over an alleged meeting between Imran Khan and a former army chief at Adiala prison, where he is being held.

Detention and medical treatment

Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison in the £190 million corruption case and 17 years in prison in the Toshakhana-2 case.

He underwent a medical procedure at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences in Islamabad on the night of January 24. This development was confirmed by the government a few days later, in a context of apparent lack of knowledge on the part of his family. Since then, he has undergone follow-up treatment in Pims.

His family also claimed that his sons, Kasim and Suleiman, were not allowed to speak to him on the phone. They further accused the government of deliberately delaying the granting of their visas. Both sons live in London with Imran Khan’s ex-wife.

PTI demonstrates outside prison

The PTI continued to stage sit-ins outside Adiala Jail on Tuesdays and Thursdays, days set by court orders for meetings with Imran Khan. These meetings have remained largely suspended in recent months.

On May 20, Aleema Khan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said shots were fired at participants when the party staged another protest outside the prison.
