PESHAWAR: Internal divisions in the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa became increasingly visible as more than 30 legislators remained absent from a meeting of the party’s parliamentary party in the provincial assembly.

Political tensions became visible before the meeting during an exchange in a party WhatsApp group after a message from Chief Minister Sohail Afridi and a strong response from former Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur.

The PTI Parliamentary Party meeting, chaired by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, was held at the Chief Minister’s House. According to sources, several disgruntled members did not attend the meeting and more than 30 lawmakers were absent from the party’s 92-member parliamentary meeting.

Addressing the party’s parliamentary meeting, Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the strong turnout of legislators despite continuous propaganda was a clear proof of unity within the party.

“I welcome all the assembly members who attended today’s meeting. No one can break us, nor force us to retreat from the ideology of Imran Khan,” he said.

Afridi added that opponents had done all they could to create divisions within the party, but the high turnout at the meeting was “a slap in the face” to those trying to weaken the PTI.

He said the agenda of the meeting was to brief the parliamentarians about the health of Imran Khan and the budget for the coming financial year.

The chief minister further claimed that due to the stubbornness of what he called the “fake government”, Imran Khan had suffered 85% vision loss in one eye. He alleged that party leaders were not allowed to meet the former prime minister, adding that PTI members and the general public were very concerned about his health condition.

“We demand that the fake government and those who brought it to power ensure that Imran Khan receives medical treatment from doctors and at a hospital of his choice, in the presence of his family,” Afridi said.

He also said that next year’s budget would be citizen-friendly and development projects would reflect the vision of Imran Khan.

According to a message shared by the CM in the parliamentary party’s WhatsApp group, an internal “General” of the party would have contacted an external “General” and would have claimed the support of 27 MPAs. He added that some elements were trying to undermine the parliamentary meeting and claimed that there were attempts to destabilize the Imran Khan government. He called on all members to attend a meeting at the chief minister’s house at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening.

He further said that no one, regardless of influence or support, could bring down the Imran Khan government, and even if the entire establishment came together, the government would not be shaken. He also called for unity among party members and said conspiracies within the party would not succeed.

Provincial Information Minister Shafi Jan told The News that all members remained united under the leadership of the chief minister. He said 75 legislators attended the meeting, while five members were not present in the province.

He warned that any member of the provincial assembly who joins a forward bloc would face serious political consequences in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Shafi Jan also clarified that Sohail Afridi’s recent WhatsApp message did not refer to anyone and was just a general statement.

Following this message, Ali Amin Gandapur responded in the same WhatsApp group, opposing the use of indirect accusations. He asked why names were not clearly mentioned and said if anyone was allegedly involved in a conspiracy against Imran Khan, he should be identified openly.

“You can’t even control the province, and yet you blame others. It is not right to distribute treason certificates among party leaders,” he wrote to the CM.

Sources say terms such as internal figure, external figure and demands involving 27 assembly members have sparked a fresh debate on internal divisions and possible regroupings within the party. Policy circles are now debating whether these concerns reflect an organized effort against the government or simply reflect growing internal political tensions.
