UK wins Rwanda’s refugee deportation case

The International Court of Arbitration based in The Hague, Netherlands, today announced its decision in the case brought by the government of Rwanda which sued the British government and said it had withdrawn from the agreement between the two countries on the expulsion of asylum seekers.

The Rwandan government submitted this case in November last year, arguing that it was owed $134 million as mentioned in the agreement between the two countries in 2022.

The former British government of Prime Minister Boris Johnson agreed with the Rwandan government in 2022 to accept refugees deported from the UK, with the UK paying the costs.

The UK has already given Rwanda $390 million to build camps for these people, but this deal was stopped by current Prime Minister Keir Starmer who, on his first day in office in July 2024, canceled this deal and called it a waste.

So far the number of people who have been deported from the UK to Rwanda is 4 people, all of whom voluntarily asked to be sent to that country.

The Rwandan government said the agreement signed in 2022 stipulated that the United Kingdom had to pay the remaining amount of 134 million, in 2025 and 2026. This international arbitration case was filed in Kigali last year after diplomatic negotiations between the two countries failed.

The arbitral tribunal declared that the United Kingdom had the right to withdraw from the agreement in this case, which became a shame for the Rwandan government.

The move will also pose an obstacle to future plans by EU countries to enter into such agreements with African countries to return refugees.
