Israel, Hezbollah must stop attacks, Trump says after ‘furious’ call with Netanyahu

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Hezbollah and Israel had agreed to stop attacking each other after weeks of intense fighting and feared the Israeli military would intensify its attacks on Beirut.

Mr. Trump said he had secured a commitment from Iran-backed Hezbollah to refrain from attacks on Israel, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had said its forces would not move deeper into Lebanon.

“I had a conversation with Bibi [Benjamin] Netanyahu today, asking him not to embark on a major raid in Beirut, Lebanon. He turned his troops around. Thanks Bibi,” Mr. Trump said on Truth Social.

He added that he “had a conversation” with representatives of Hezbollah, which the United States has designated a terrorist group. “They agreed to stop shooting at Israel and its soldiers. Likewise, Israel agreed to stop shooting at them. Let’s see how long this lasts – I hope it will be forever,” he wrote.

According to the Lebanese Embassy in Washington, the agreement calls on Israel to refrain from any strikes on Beirut and its Hezbollah-controlled suburbs, and for Hezbollah to end its attacks against Israel.

Mr. Netanyahu said he told Mr. Trump: “If Hezbollah does not stop shooting at our cities and citizens, Israel will strike terrorist targets in Beirut. »

The developments came hours after Mr Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz said the Israeli army had been instructed to strike “Hezbollah targets” in Beirut’s southern suburbs after ordering residents to leave.

In a previous article on Truth Social, Mr. Trump said he had “very productive” talks with Mr. Netanyahu. But Axios cited US officials as saying Mr Trump was furious over the call, adding that “everyone hates Israel” because of its threats to bomb Beirut.

The Israeli embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. “Israel will not attack them and they will not attack Israel,” Mr. Trump said of Hezbollah.

Israeli news outlet Ynet, citing an Israeli official, reported that Israel had postponed a strike on Dahieh, Beirut, at the request of the United States. “Lebanese authorities have received confirmation of Hezbollah’s agreement to the American proposal, which calls for a reciprocal cessation of attacks,” the Lebanese embassy wrote in a statement.

Under the proposal, Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs would cease in exchange for Hezbollah’s refraining from attacking Israel, with the framework expected to expand to cover all Lebanese territory, according to the statement.

The embassy added that Mr. Trump had informed Lebanon’s ambassador to Washington, Nada Moawad, that Mr. Netanyahu had accepted the arrangement.

The agreement came after a call between Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the statement said.

A new round of negotiations between Israel and Lebanon is expected to take place this week in Washington at the State Department. Last week, military officials from both countries met at the Pentagon.

More than 1.2 million people in Lebanon have been displaced by Israeli strikes and orders to flee their homes since the conflict escalated. Around 3,300 people were killed and Israeli troops destroyed many villages and towns in the south of the country.

Iran talks

What is happening in Lebanon is closely linked to what is happening in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian leaders earlier announced a suspension of negotiations with Washington, saying a ceasefire in Lebanon must be achieved before a broader deal with the United States can move forward.

Mr. Trump said negotiations with Iran were continuing “at a rapid pace.” He later told ABC News that although there had been “a little problem today,” he had “resolved the situation very quickly.”

Mr. Trump added that a deal to reopen the strait would be reached “within the next week.”
