Viral youth group ‘Cockroach’ in India plans street protest to challenge Modi | WTVB | 1590 AM · 95.5 FM
NEW DELHI, June 1 (Reuters) – The founder of an Indian online youth group that amassed millions of followers in days said on Monday he planned to take to the streets with his movement to protest the education minister and to show dissent against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Cockroach Janta Party has exploited the concerns of those under 30, who make up more than half of India’s 1.42 billion people, over politics, unemployment and inflation. US-based founder Abhijeet Dipke has focused particularly on recent exam paper leaks and final-year exam marking errors that threaten to derail the careers of “millions of students”.
“I will return to India to demand the resignation of the education minister,” Dipke said on his personal account on X, urging young people to join a peaceful protest in Delhi and “exercise our constitutional right to hold the government accountable.”
He said nearly 800,000 students have signed a petition demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The minister and a government spokesperson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The CJP’s rapid rise constitutes one of the largest online expressions of dissent against Modi’s 12-year rule, and analysts say it could damage its image, despite recent election victories, as frustration grows over rising fuel prices and gas shortages linked to the war in Iran.
The party’s name refers to comments by India’s top judge, Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant, who compared some unemployed youth to cockroaches. Kant later said that he did not mean to “criticize young people but was referring to those who held “false and false diplomas.” The party has more than 22 million followers on Instagram.
DIPKE SAYS HIS FAMILY FEARS HE COULD BE ARRESTED
Dipke, who has lived in the United States for two years, said his family and friends feared he would be arrested when he returned. “How long can we live in fear? » he said.
The government blocked the CJP’s X account and Dipke told Reuters he had to regain control of the party’s Instagram page from unknown hackers.
Minister Kiren Rijiju accused the CJP of seeking social media followers from arch-enemy Pakistan and the “anti-India gang”, while Modi is yet to comment.
Shaken by anger over the cancellation of an entrance test for undergraduate medical courses last month due to a leak, the government is considering deploying the Indian Air Force to transport the question papers for a retest this month, instead of using the postal service.
The CJP also focused on the youth employment crisis. Government data shows that for people aged 15 to 29, the unemployment rate was 9.9% last year, more than triple the overall rate of 3.1%.
