Melbourne Stars and Renegades to merge as lone Cricket Victoria Big Bash team with second license sold, BBL privatization plan, latest news

Melbourne’s two Big Bash League teams are set to merge as part of Cricket Australia’s major overhaul of the T20 competition.

This is reported by Tom Morris of SEN the Stars and Renegades will be combined into one team managed by Cricket Victoria, with staff to be informed on Tuesday.

The new merged team would still be called Melbourne rather than Victoria, due to BBL rules, and would play at the MCG and likely wear the state colors of navy blue.

Daniel Cherny of Code Sports reports this last week the Bushrangers was considered a new name.

Cricket Victoria runs both teams, but the state is reportedly committed to a full sale (not just a partial sale) of its second license, with that team expected to be bought by investors linked to the IPL and renamed.

Previous reports had suggested that the Renegades would be sold and play matches at the MCG, GMHBA Stadium, the Junction Oval and Chennai, India.

Cherny compared the new situation to that of the A-League’s two Melbourne sides, Victory (locally owned) and City (foreign owned).

He reported this on Tuesday evening the playing lists of the Stars and Renegades will “effectively remain the same for the time being” and the merger was mainly an administrative matter.

Cricket Australia’s bid to privatize the BBL, with investors set to join the league for the 2027-28 season, was shelved in April when Queensland joined New South Wales in rejecting the plan.

But the organization remains in favor of a partial privatization model, allowing states to make their own decisions, and this move by Victoria would follow that plan.

“NSW and Queensland are certainly not in favor of private capital. NSW has an alternative model of self-funding it. Queensland doesn’t have an alternative model. But they don’t believe private capital is for them,” CA boss Todd Greenberg said at the time.

“South Australia is in a hybrid situation where they would like some states to take the opportunity to bring in private capital, and then some states to come in later by choice.

“Then there are three other states, Victoria, WA and Tasmania, which are very strong and very supportive of the ability to bring private capital into their states.

“So if you’re in my shoes, with a federated model and six members, that’s why it’s hard.”

Privatization would inject money in the short term and potentially see BBL sides linked to counterparts in other international T20 competitions, with the risk of losing control of the teams and any future profits in the long term.

The Renegades won the 2018/19 championship, while the Stars are the only team never to win a BBL title, finishing runners-up three times.
