Trump finds peace talks with Iran ‘boring’. It’s worrying.

During an interview with President Donald Trump on Monday, CNBC reporter Eamon Javers asked about the status of negotiations between the United States and Iran, asking the president: “Do you think the negotiations are over now, or is this a bluff?” The question follows reports that Iran is suspending peace negotiations with the United States due to Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

“I honestly don’t care if they’re finished,” Trump responded. “I really don’t care. I don’t care. If they’re finished, they’re finished. If they’re not, you know, I think they took too long. Frankly, I thought they were starting to get very boring. They were giving us what we needed, but I think they mishandled the negotiations. It took too long.”

It’s a good summary of why Trump is uniquely ill-suited to execute the peace deal he so desperately needs — and how his short attention span is constantly screwing up his political aspirations.

Very little about Trump’s tenure has not prepared him for this moment.

Trump’s claim that he doesn’t care about the state of the negotiations is theatrical absurdity – there is no doubt that he must find a deal with Iran to conclude its disastrous war and bring down record-high oil prices ahead of the midterm elections. But I would venture to say that his drama can be partly explained by his irritation at the way the discussions had “begun to become very boring”.

Trump is saying out loud what reporters at The New York Times and The Atlantic have documented in interviews with those around him: Negotiations are testing his short attention span. This is a worrying sign for any future peace agreement.

Diplomatic negotiations to end wars are inherently tedious and exhausting exercises. They require patience, attention to detail, the ability to wait for the opponent to bluff, and an ever-changing assessment of the other party’s interests and power. In this case, it also requires the United States to rein in Israel, which has political and geostrategic interests distinct from those of the United States and which appears to have an endless appetite for dropping bombs in the region.
