PTI KP lawmakers seek plan for Imran Khan’s release

A group of PTI legislators from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have written to party president Barrister Gohar Ali, calling for a more organized strategy for the release of Imran Khan. The letter also raises concerns about governance, consultation and resource allocation in the province.

PESHAWAR: A group of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf lawmakers from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa have expressed concern over what they described as insufficient efforts by the party leadership for the release of jailed founder Imran Khan, while also flagging complaints related to governance in the province and calling for a structured action plan.

The concerns were expressed in a letter sent to PTI chairman Barrister Gohar Ali after a meeting in Peshawar attended by provincial lawmakers. According to the letter, the participants said the situation surrounding the campaign for Imran Khan’s release, as well as his health condition, was creating unease among party workers, supporters and what they called patriotic citizens.

The letter stated that workers felt the campaign had moved away from its main goal and had now focused primarily on health and treatment issues. He added that ongoing efforts to free the former prime minister appeared to be largely limited to formal declarations, limited protest activities and symbolic measures.

“The workers feel that the liberation movement has deviated from its basic orientation and limited itself only to issues of health and treatment. The ongoing movement for the release of the leader seems largely limited to formal declarations, restricted protest activities and symbolic measures. A new strategy should be formulated to make the movement effective, organized and result-oriented,” he said.

The lawmakers warn in the letter that if these concerns are not addressed quickly and effectively, the party could suffer political damage. They demanded a positive, comprehensive and effective strategy for the release of Imran Khan, while also seeking an organized plan for the imprisoned party leaders and workers, including legal support, family welfare and other necessary issues.

Governance issues raised

Apart from the release campaign, the legislators also expressed reservations over what they called interference by unconcerned individuals in the affairs of the provincial government, deviations from merit, unequal allocation of resources and inadequate consultation of elected MPs on powers and development funds related to their constituencies.

According to the letter, participants stressed that government affairs should be conducted on the basis of transparency, merit, institutional discipline and consultation with elected representatives. They said that since the PTI had formed the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government, Imran Khan’s stated vision of merit, transparency and good governance should be implemented in practical terms in all sectors.

The letter said the lawmakers held detailed discussions at the party’s parliamentary meeting on the broader political situation of the party, the release of Imran Khan, difficulties faced by party workers and leaders, effectiveness of the current freedom movement and governance issues in the province. He also said that a comprehensive strategy should be prepared in light of the views of legislators so that interference from irrelevant elements can be controlled and the provincial government can deliver public service and governance more effectively.

Call for legal coordination

The lawmakers also called for a coordinated, active and effective legal strategy in the cases of Imran Khan, party leaders and workers, saying it would send a clear message to workers and the public about the seriousness and determination of the party.

The letter further stated that some social media platforms and media outlets were creating a misleading impression by linking assembly members to various groups or personalities. He said the meeting clearly showed that all members of the assembly remained committed to the ideology, manifesto and vision of PTI founder Imran Khan and were not pursuing the agenda of any group, faction or individual personality.

“The meeting clarified that all members of the assembly are committed to the ideology, manifesto and vision of PTI founder Imran Khan and are not working on the agenda of any group, faction or personality and are not associating themselves with any specific group,” the letter said.

Copies of the letter were also sent to the party’s central general secretary and central information secretary.

One of the disgruntled MPs told Dawn that around 20 lawmakers were apparently unhappy over not getting ministerial posts in the recent expansion. The lawmaker said these legislators did not attend the party’s parliamentary meeting called by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, which was called to demonstrate that there was no division within the party. The same MPA said that all the disgruntled lawmakers went together to Rawalpindi on Tuesday to protest outside Adiala jail, where Imran Khan is being held. He also said that lawyer Gohar Ali was yet to respond to the letter as he was busy with the party’s election campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan.
