David Cameron offered Boris Johnson a senior Cabinet post in return for campaigning for the UK to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum, it has been revealed.

Johnson said: “He then said: ‘Look, would you consider joining us in the Remain campaign? It would be much better if… I’d like to have you in the Cabinet. You should have a position in the top five. And I wasn’t sure of the exact hierarchy. I obviously thought about it out of pure curiosity, what was that position? There’s the Prime Minister, the Chancellor, the Home Secretary, the Foreign Secretary. That’s four. What’s the fifth? One mystery.'”
The revelation, confirmed by Cameron, is made in the first episode of a two-part BBC documentary on the referendum, A Very British Civil War, which will be broadcast on June 8.
Cameron, who is now a peer, told the documentary: “I didn’t say what job it was, I said, ‘Have no doubt, defense is in the top five jobs, for example.’ I wanted him to understand that I valued his contribution and that he would play a major role in government in the future.
The tennis match took place at the US ambassador’s tennis court, next to Regent’s Park, which Cameron said he could use in a “wonderful deal” as a place for rest and recreation.
Craig Oliver, who was Cameron’s communications director at the time, said the then prime minister came back from the tennis match “doubly good”.
“Firstly, he beat Boris Johnson at tennis, and secondly, he could have a concession that he joins the government,” he added.
Johnson’s decision to back Brexit ultimately came as a blow to Cameron, who had pleaded with him earlier in the day to announce his decision to avoid “linking arms” with Nigel Farage and George Galloway. by supporting a British exit from the EU.
Michael Gove, Justice Secretary and close colleague of Johnson at the time, had already announced that he would also campaign for his departure.
