Delhi hotel fire kills at least 21; PM Modi announces Rs 2 Lakh ex gratia | Life in Kashmir




SRINAGAR: At least 21 people were killed and over 40 others rescued after a major fire broke out at a hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning, NDTV reported.

According to Hindustan Timesthe majority of victims are believed to be foreign nationals, with authorities saying several victims are believed to be from Central Asia and Africa. Authorities added that the death toll could rise as rescue and identification operations continue.

The fire reportedly broke out around 8:50 a.m. in the basement restaurant of the Flourish Stay hotel, located in a five-story building. It later expanded to a neighboring hotel, the Micasa Inn.

Fire services deployed several units to the scene, including two water tankers, two water tankers, a rapid response vehicle and other fire-fighting equipment, after receiving an emergency call from the densely populated locality, frequented by students and young professionals.

Authorities said rescue operations were undertaken to evacuate guests trapped inside the building, and more than 40 people were rescued from the affected premises.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident and announced a gracious assistance of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the next of kin of each deceased, while Rs 50,000 would be provided to the injured.

Terming the incident tragic, the Prime Minister said authorities were extending all possible assistance to those affected.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed deep sadness over the fire which claimed lives.

In a message on X, he offered his sincere condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured. The Chief Minister also expressed solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy.
