DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Kuwait briefly closed the country’s main airport on Wednesday after Iranian drones severely damaged it and killed one person — the latest salvo in a series of back-and-forth attacks from Tehran and Washington that have tested a fragile ceasefire.

The strikes came as Iran’s semi-official news agencies said the country had stopped communicating with mediators about extending the ceasefire in the war with the United States and Israel. A regional official said Tehran wanted the truce in Lebanon to be enforced before resuming talks. US President Donald Trump said negotiations were continuing.

Those talks have been going on for weeks, and repeated exchanges of strikes in the Gulf region and Israel’s escalating war in Lebanon are further straining the efforts.

Meanwhile, Iran maintained its grip on the Strait of Hormuz – a crucial artery for the world’s oil and natural gas – and the United States continued its blockade of Iranian ports, ensuring that global fuel prices remained high and the effects of the conflict were felt far beyond the region.

Iranian drones strike Kuwait’s main airport

Ministry of Defense spokesperson Brig. Gen. Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi said “a number of hostile drones” targeted the passenger building at Kuwait International Airport, severely damaging the building and injuring “a number of people.”

Later, the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry said at least one person had been killed.

State media reported that Kuwait Airways had suspended operations. Civil aviation authorities said the airport partially reopened later in the day, with Kuwait Airways flights resuming from a different terminal than the affected one. No other flights would be operational, they said.

The airport only reopened on Monday after being closed at the start of the war.

The US military said Iran fired two missiles at Kuwait that collapsed en route and “downed several drones” targeting US forces in the country.

The military also said U.S. and Bahraini forces intercepted missiles targeting the Gulf kingdom, which is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet. Bahrain’s Defense Ministry said its army intercepted and destroyed three missiles and a number of drones fired by Iran.

The US military said it launched strikes against an Iranian military control station on the island of Qeshm in the Strait of Hormuz in response to attacks on Bahrain and Kuwait.

Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard acknowledged targeting the 5th Fleet headquarters and U.S. military installations in another country, but did not name Kuwait. He said the strikes were in retaliation for attacks on Qeshm island.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US strikes on the island of Qeshm, where it said a telecommunications tower was hit, as well as other earlier strikes. He called them “acts of aggression” that he said violated the ceasefire.

A senior Emirati diplomat on Wednesday called for “a firm, unified and coherent Gulf stance” against Iran following the attacks.

“This aggression does not target a particular state, but all of us,” wrote Anwar Gargash on the X platform.

Iranian news agencies report pause in communication with mediators

Iranian news agencies Fars and Tasnim, both considered close to the Guard, reported that Iranian negotiators had stopped communicating with ceasefire mediators as tensions rose in Israel’s separate but related fight against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

A regional official involved in the mediation, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the talks, told The Associated Press that Iran did not communicate at all Tuesday after saying a ceasefire must be enforced in Lebanon for negotiations to continue.

Trump called reports of a halt in negotiations “false and erroneous.”

“Conversations between us have continued on an ongoing basis, including four days ago, three days ago, two days ago, a day ago and today,” Trump said in a social media post. “Where they lead, you never know, but as I told Iran: ‘It’s time, one way or another, for you to make a deal.’

The war with Iran is increasingly linked to Israel’s war in Lebanon

Israeli forces have moved deeper into Lebanon than at any time in more than a quarter of a century – despite a nominal ceasefire in place between Israel and Hezbollah.

Lebanon has become a major sticking point in Trump’s efforts to sign a ceasefire deal with Iran.

Tehran insists that any potential broader truce in the war must also ease fighting in Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to keep the issues separate and is under intense domestic pressure to hit Hezbollah as he prepares for new elections this fall.

The fighting has exposed a divide between close allies Israel and the United States, with the United States pushing for restraint and Israel seeking to step up military pressure on Hezbollah.

A person familiar with the matter said Netanyahu and Trump had a “tense” conversation earlier this week. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media. The person did not provide details about the call.
