PTI lawmakers from KP slam ‘lack of effort’ for Imran’s release – Pakistan

PESHAWAR: A group of lawmakers of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has expressed concerns over the leadership’s “lack of efforts” for the release of incarcerated party founder Imran Khan and governance issues in the province and demanded a comprehensive and organized action plan for this purpose.

The lawmakers, who are said to be unhappy at not being included in the provincial cabinet during the recent expansion, wrote a letter to PTI president Barrister Gohar Ali following their meeting in Peshawar.

The letter said participants at the Peshawar meeting complained that the situation regarding the movement for Imran Khan’s release and his health condition was causing “anxiety among workers, supporters and patriotic citizens”.

“The workers feel that the liberation movement has deviated from its basic orientation and limited itself only to issues of health and treatment. The ongoing movement for the leader’s release seems largely limited to formal declarations, restricted protest activities and symbolic measures. A new strategy should be formulated to make the movement effective, organized and result-oriented,” the letter read.

The MPAs warned that if the issues were not resolved quickly and effectively, the party could suffer politically.

They also expressed reservations regarding “interference by unconcerned individuals in the affairs of the provincial government, deviations from merit, unfair distribution of resources and lack of proper consultation of concerned MPAs in decisions regarding the powers and development resources of their constituencies.”

The participants stressed that all government affairs must be conducted in accordance with transparency, merit, institutional discipline and consultation with elected representatives of the public, according to the letter.

He noted that during the party’s parliamentary meeting, the lawmakers held detailed deliberations on the overall political situation of the party, the release of Imran Khan, problems faced by the party workers and leaders, the effectiveness of the ongoing Imran release movement and various governance issues in the province.

They complained that some social media platforms and news outlets were creating a false impression by associating assembly members with different groups or individuals.

“The meeting clarified that all members of the assembly are committed to the ideology, manifesto and vision of PTI founder Imran Khan and are not working on the agenda of any group, faction or personality and are not associating themselves with any specific group,” the letter said.

The participants called for a “positive, comprehensive, effective and results-oriented strategy” for Imran’s release.

According to them, along with Imran Khan, hundreds of party leaders and workers are also enduring the hardships of imprisonment, therefore a comprehensive and organized action plan should be formulated for their release, legal assistance, welfare of their families and other necessary issues.

The letter said the meeting recommends a coordinated, active and effective legal strategy to pursue the cases of Imran, party leaders and workers so that workers and people receive a clear message about the seriousness and determination of the party.

They emphasized that since the inception of the PTI government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, it was essential that Imran’s vision, merit, transparency and good governance were implemented in practice in all sectors.

A comprehensive strategy should be formulated taking into account the opinions and concerns of assembly members to effectively prevent interference from irrelevant elements and enable the provincial government to set an example of public service and excellent governance, the letter said.

The lawmakers also sent copies of the letter to the PTI’s central general secretary and central information secretary.

One of the disgruntled MPs told Dawn that around 20 lawmakers were apparently unhappy over not being given ministerial posts.

He added that these legislators did not attend the party’s parliamentary meeting called by Chief Minister Sohail Afridi to show that there is no division within the party.

The MPA said that on Tuesday, all the disgruntled MPAs went together to Rawalpindi to stage a protest outside Adiala jail where Imran Khan was detained.

He said PTI president Barrister Gohar Ali was yet to respond to the letter as he was busy with the party’s election campaign in Gilgit-Baltistan.
