PESHAWAR: Heightening pressure on the federal government, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi on Tuesday announced that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) lawmakers from across the country will stage a sit-in outside the National Assembly on June 10 if restrictions on meetings with party founder Imran Khan continue.

Speaking to reporters after being denied permission to meet the PTI chief incarcerated at Adiala prison, Afridi condemned continued limitations on access to Khan and warned that the party could also oppose and disrupt the passage of the next federal budget.

The chief minister stressed that he and the provincial financial advisor should be allowed to consult Imran Khan before finalizing the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa budget. He argued that the provincial government derives its political mandate from Khan’s leadership and therefore considers his advice essential on major policy decisions.

Afridi announced that the party would approach the Islamabad High Court for legal permission to meet the former prime minister. He argued that repeated refusals to allow interactions with Khan were unacceptable and could further escalate political tensions.

Raising concerns over Khan’s health and conditions, the chief minister said the PTI founder remained isolated and deprived of regular contact with his family members, party leaders and his personal doctors. He requested that Khan be transferred to Shifa International Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment under the supervision of his own doctors and in the presence of family members.

According to Afridi, access to adequate health care is a fundamental legal and constitutional right, and refusing such services fuels concerns about Khan’s well-being. He said continued restrictions on family visits and medical consultations have created widespread unease among PTI supporters.

Reaffirming the party’s loyalty to its founding leader, Afridi described Imran Khan as the undisputed leader of the PTI and said the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government continues to derive its legitimacy and public mandate from his leadership. He warned that any further attempts to politically isolate Khan could trigger a stronger response from the party nationally.
