Tom Boysen is the head men’s and women’s tennis coach at EKU

RICHMOND, Ky. – Tom Boysena veteran of the collegiate and professional tennis ranks with coaching experience in the SEC, Big Ten, Ivy League and Summit League, has been named head coach of the Eastern Kentucky University men’s and women’s tennis programs, director of athletics Kyle Moats announced on Tuesday.
Boysen arrives in Richmond after spending the past five seasons as head coach of both the men’s and women’s tennis programs at the University of North Dakota. He brings more than a decade of NCAA Division I coaching experience, along with three years traveling internationally as a private coach and manager on the professional tennis circuit.
“I am excited to have Coach Boysen as a member of our coaching staff. He is a highly respected coach who will fit in well with the Richmond and EKU community,” said Moats. “He has a proven track record of success and his experience will greatly benefit our team. Most importantly, he is a person of character who will represent EKU with class.”
Boysen transformed North Dakota into a perennial Summit League contender, overseeing a five-year run that included 127 combined wins, nine conference tournament appearances and four trips to the league championship game.
The Fighting Hawks men’s team recorded a program record 18 wins during the 2025 season and advanced to the Summit League Championship game for the first time in school history. North Dakota followed with 15 wins and another appearance in the championship game in 2026. Under Boysen, the men’s program qualified for five consecutive conference tournaments and posted four seasons of double-digit wins.
On the women’s side, North Dakota earned four consecutive Summit League Tennis Tournament appearances and reached two championship matches under Boysen’s leadership. He led the program to five straight double-digit scoring seasons from 2021-26, including 14 wins in each of the last two campaigns.

McFaddin, Director of Athletics Kyle Moatsand Senior Associate Athletic Director and Tennis Sports Administrator Dusty Ridner for believing in me to lead this program.”

Before heading to North Dakota, Boysen served three stints as an NCAA Division I assistant coach, spanning 15 years at the University of Nebraska, Dartmouth College and Vanderbilt University.
During his time at Nebraska from 2018-21, Boysen helped the Cornhuskers achieve a double-digit winning season and a Big Ten Tournament appearance in his first year with the program.
At Dartmouth from 2015 to 2018, Boysen was named Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year in 2016 after helping the Big Green to a second-place finish in the Ivy League. Dartmouth appeared twice on the ITA team rankings during his tenure, producing an Ivy League Player of the Year and multiple Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.
During five seasons at Vanderbilt, from 2006 to 2011, Boysen helped lead the Commodores to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Vanderbilt finished each of his five seasons atop the ITA rankings, including a final ranking of No. 26 in 2008. In addition to Vanderbilt’s team success, Boysen helped four student-athletes qualify for the NCAA Singles Championship.
“It was clear at every stage of the application process that EKU is a special place,” Boysen said. “The vision for EKU athletics expressed by those in leadership roles and the passion with which they spoke about it immediately resonated with me. I am so excited to be part of the EKU family and the Richmond community.”
Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Boysen traveled the world for three seasons as a coach and manager for several professional players on the ATP Tour, including Todd Widom, Scott Lipsky, David Martin and Andres Pedroso.
Widom was ranked No. 200 in the ATP rankings and appeared in three US Open qualifying draws. Lipsky won the mixed doubles championship at the 2011 French Open. Martin and Lipsky advanced to the third round at Wimbledon in 2007, and the pair competed in the semifinals in Newport that same year.
During the same period, Boysen also coached at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee, from 2011 to 2014. He led the program to Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) state championships in 2011 and 2012.
Boysen graduated from the University of Central Florida in 1992 with a degree in management. He was also a member of the Knights’ varsity tennis team.
