Bazball comes full circle with a promise to ‘evolve a bit’ as New Zealand rolls into town | England cricket team

FOur years to the day after England’s first Test under Brendon McCullum started against New Zealand at Lord’s, the start of a summer in which players reached new heights and observers sought new words to describe them, the latest incarnations of the two teams gathered at St John’s Wood as preparations for the rematch were ramped up. The series restarts amid talk of a new approach in England.

In 2022, New Zealand batted first in all three matches and in all three England chased down Test targets to seal victory. The attacking approach that McCullum initiated that summer was most memorably epitomized by Jonny Bairstow. In more than a century of Test cricket before that year (not including the early years of the game, when that kind of data was not collected) only three English players had scored more than 300 runs in a series at a strike rate of more than 85. In just four years since a further 10 have joined their tally, a list topped by Bairstow against the Kiwis in 2022, when he rose to 394 runs at a strike rate of 120.12. That figure has only been improved once, and even then marginally, in cricketing history, although the 330 runs at 121.32 achieved by Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi against India in 2006 was largely down to his contributions to a few high-scoring draws on batting-friendly deliveries.

“It was a really memorable series,” McCullum said Tuesday. “We had some big chases and we went with it and we were willing to fail at that point in pursuit of the win. From where we were when we took over, to trying to record those totals and ultimately being able to chase them down, was huge. Jonny did what he did and the style of cricket we played was what was needed at the time.

“What’s needed now is for us to evolve a little bit – still recognize the identity that we want to play with, but evolve a little bit. And I think I’ve identified a lot of those areas that we’re working on. New Zealand are a better team than when they came here a few years ago, I think. We know they’re going to do things very well over a long period of time. Our job is to find a way to be able to compete with that style, but also disrupt it once we’ve earned the right to be able to compete.” do that. It’s a fascinating series. Again, two different styles, but we’ll see where we end up.

England’s restart after the Ashes means New Zealand arrive for the second time in two visits with some uncertainty over the approach England will take against them. ‘I don’t know if she has one [new] version of their game, but I think you’re always trying to assess where you are as a team and how you can get a little bit better. That’s undoubtedly on their minds, as we are all the time,” said Kane Williamson, who captained New Zealand in 2022 and is one of nine members of that squad to return this year under Tom Latham’s captaincy.

“You want to continue to evolve as a team and make the most of what you have, amid the changes that happen over time. [In 2022] it was a big difference, one of the first series where they changed their game significantly, and [there were] three incredible cricket matches and three successful ones for England. So yeah, it’s hard. You can’t control what other people do, but it’s what we do that matters and that’s where our focus will be.”

Last week, McCullum spoke of wanting to “finish the work we started four years ago.” The question as he builds his new England, in the most famous Test venues, with a largely familiar team and against familiar opponents – especially for the New Zealander – is what completion might look like.

“You’re trying to build something that’s long-term, sustainable and successful, right? Something that will last longer than the time you’re here in post,” he said. ‘I went to Beckenham the other day [where the Lions were playing South Africa A in an unofficial Test]. To see some of that young talent, you know… They are the future of English cricket. They’re going to help this team move forward for 15, 16 years.

“Our job is to anchor an identity so that when they get the opportunity to come in, they can allow that talent to flourish on this stage. That’s what you’re trying to build. You’re trying to build a team that is ultimately successful, wins the big series, does it with an identity and a playing style, but is also the smartest team in the world when it comes to tactics and the execution of those.” The cricket that McCullum now encourages may be slightly less brutal than four years ago, but the same cannot be said of his ambitions.
