Donald Trump did not insult Benjamin Netanyahu during his call to Lebanon, according to an Israeli source

An Israeli source familiar with the details disputed a report that US President Donald Trump personally insulted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a tense phone call Monday over Israel’s planned strike on Hezbollah targets in Beirut on Tuesday.

The source said the disagreement centered on public messaging after the call, as Washington sought to prevent an escalation in Lebanon in U.S.-Iran negotiations.

“Trump did not direct personal insults toward Netanyahu,” the Israeli source said, adding that the tense exchange centered on “each side’s statements” after the conversation.

This comes after Axios reported that Trump told Netanyahu: “Everyone hates you now.” Everyone hates Israel because of it.”

According to the report, during that call, which came after Iran threatened to cease negotiations with the United States over Israel’s action in Lebanon earlier Monday, Trump at one point shouted at Netanyahu: “What the hell are you doing?”

A US official said it was one of Trump’s worst calls with Netanyahu since the start of his second term.

Another US official said Trump believed Netanyahu was responding disproportionately to Hezbollah attacks on Israel. Axios reported that the president opposed Israel destroying buildings to eliminate a single Hezbollah commander and Israel’s threats against Beirut.

Strike plans in Beirut halted

The dispute follows a day of escalating tensions in northern Israel, where Hezbollah rocket and drone fire prompted Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz to order new attacks on Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s Dahiyeh stronghold, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Those plans were delayed after U.S. and Iranian intervention, and no strikes on Beirut had taken place at the time of Trump’s announcement.

The Post reported that Trump announced after the call that Israel would not send troops to Beirut and that Hezbollah agreed to stop shooting.

After the call, Trump announced a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon, adding that “no troops will be traveling to Beirut, and all troops en route have already been turned back.”

In exchange, he added, Hezbollah had agreed that all shooting would stop – “that Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.”

Later, Netanyahu announced that he had told Trump that “if Hezbollah does not stop attacking our cities and citizens, Israel will attack terrorist targets in Beirut.”

Political consequences in Israel

The decision to call off the strike drew criticism from Israeli officials, including National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who said it was time for Netanyahu to say “no” to Trump.

Opposition figures also criticized Netanyahu’s response to the call and the broader security situation in northern Israel, with opposition leader Yair Lapid accusing Netanyahu of behaving as if Israel were a protectorate state of the United States.
