Security of energy supply is a matter of national security, says President Erdogan

The war between Russia and Ukraine and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz have shown that ensuring security of energy supplies is not only a question of development, but also a question of sovereignty and national security, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Wednesday.
Speaking at a renewable energy investment event in the capital Ankara, Erdogan said Turkey had invested $5 billion in plants with a capacity of 6,818 megawatts.
Turkey is becoming more important day by day as a regional energy center, he said.
With the de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz – the Gulf countries’ gateway to the high seas – the largest oil supply disruption in history occurred, he recalled.
He said the closure of the strait had led to the disruption of about 25% of global oil supplies and 20% of liquefied natural gas trade.
Oil prices, which hovered around $60 per barrel, rose to double that amount, he recalled.
He pointed out that the world is facing these same staggering figures, not only for LNG prices, but also for all oil-derived products, including fertilizers and plastics.
Reminding that some countries have implemented various restrictions, similar to those seen during the Covid-19 pandemic, to reduce energy consumption, Erdoğan said: “Schools were closed, restrictions were imposed on the entry of private vehicles into traffic.
“There have been a significant number of flight cancellations. Long queues have formed at gas stations.”
As oil and natural gas prices have risen, inflation has begun to rise around the world, he pointed out, adding that although a global economic recovery was expected just a few months ago, as the Hormuz crisis drags on, many countries are now bracing for a recession.
