Democrats force vote on Trump’s $1.8 billion settlement fund in ‘vote-a-rama’ | Donald Trump News

Democrats force vote on Trump’s .8 billion settlement fund in ‘vote-a-rama’ | Donald Trump News

Republicans in the US Senate have renewed their efforts to pass a controversial $70 billion bill aimed at funding immigration enforcement, a top policy priority of President Donald Trump.

But Thursday’s efforts ran into a series of obstacles, as Democrats forced the vote on several amendments highlighting controversies linked to the Trump presidency.

The quick votes on the amendments have been called a “vote-a-rama,” and they are expected to include issues ranging from Trump’s ballroom at the White House to his tariff policies and the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

“Amendment after amendment, vote after vote, Republicans will have to answer to the American people,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

From the start, Republicans were forced to confront an issue that has dominated headlines in recent weeks: Trump’s proposed $1.776 billion “anti-arms” fund.

The fund has sparked controversy on both sides, with critics calling it a slush fund for Trump’s allies.

Several Republicans have indicated that the optics of such a fund could be politically catastrophic in the run-up to the November midterm elections, and the Justice Department has since backed out of the plan.

But Trump himself avoided saying whether the fund was dead or simply suspended.

It was created as part of a settlement following a lawsuit Trump filed against the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a part of his government, and was designed to provide compensation to alleged victims of politically motivated lawsuits.

Senate Democrats have repeatedly called for such a fund to be banned outright, rather than relying on the Trump administration’s pledge not to revive it.

However, on Thursday, Senate Republicans rejected the Democrats’ measure to permanently block the fund.

Republican Tom Tillis introduced a second amendment that would have also banned the settlement fund. Instead, the legislation would have redirected the allocated funds to a separate anti-fraud fund within the Justice Department. This too was rejected.

Thursday’s votes on the anti-arms fund were just the start of several rounds of voting on uncomfortable issues for the Republican Party.

Schumer, the top Democrat, signaled that other amendments would attack another aspect of the IRS rule: the permanent immunity from tax audits that Trump had obtained for himself and his family.

Trump’s controversial campaign on immigration control and other issues were also expected to be addressed in the day’s amendments.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he was not sure Republicans would reject all the measures, with some in the party showing a growing willingness to stand up to Trump.

“I can’t predict how it’s going to go,” he said.

Immigration Funding Bill

Thursday’s situation was the result of an impasse between Democrats and Republicans over the Trump administration’s approach to immigration control.

Democrats had pledged not to approve additional funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) following the killing of two US citizens during immigration operations in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Republicans control 53 seats in the House of 100, less than the 60-vote threshold needed to overcome a filibuster.

Instead, they were forced to pursue a lengthy procedural maneuver to circumvent the filibuster, which took weeks.

The $70 billion funding bill had been stalled by the Trump administration’s request to include $1 billion for security upgrades for the Trump White House ballroom project.

The request comes after the president repeatedly said no taxpayer money would be spent on the project.

Security funding, which rattled several Republicans, was then abandoned before voting began.

The Senate parliamentarian, an official who interprets the chamber’s rules, previously ruled that adding ballroom funding to the $70 billion bill would make it ineligible for the budget reconciliation process, which allows tax bills to pass with a simple majority.

If Senate Republicans remain united, they are expected to pass the funding bill late Thursday night or early Friday.

The Republican-controlled House of Representatives is expected to take up the bill shortly thereafter.
