“Pressuring Narendra Modi is detrimental to international relations”: Russian President Putin
Saint Petersburg: Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday hailed India as a “great country” and defended New Delhi’s independent foreign policy, while lashing out at attempts by the United States to pressure India over its cooperation with Russia, saying such moves are “damaging” to bilateral and international relations.
In a speech to the media at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum, Putin said: “We are happy that India is developing its relations with all countries. It is a great country.”
Hailing the largest democracy and a thriving economy, Putin said: “It is completely natural for (India) to develop its economy in accordance with its interests with the countries it deems necessary.”
He added: “The United States is trying to put pressure on India, for example, when it comes to cooperation with Russia. But putting pressure on Narendra Modi is detrimental to international and bilateral relations. It doesn’t matter where that pressure comes from. »
Regarding India’s economic growth under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Putin said, “India is one of the leading economies in the world with the highest economic growth rates.
He further highlighted how New Delhi and Moscow enjoy a privileged strategic partnership.
“This is how I characterize this relationship. This did not happen yesterday, nor one or five years ago. This is something we have been working on for decades. In 1947, when the Soviet Union established diplomatic relations with the Indian Republic, we did everything in our power to support the creation of a new state, a new independent state. I am happy to say that thanks to the hard work and talent of the Indian people, India has achieved great and important achievements in its development,” said the Russian President.
