Öcalan suggested new peace framework at Imrali’s last meeting: DEM Party
ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan Region – The pro-Kurdish People’s Equality and Democracy Party (DEM) said Tuesday that imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan proposed a new framework to overcome political impasses in the country’s peace process, stressing that it should be adopted before Parliament’s summer recess.
In late May, the DEM party’s Imrali delegation visited imprisoned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan on the high-security island, marking the first visit to the imprisoned leader in months.
“At the last Imrali meeting, Mr. Öcalan presented a new formula and a new roadmap to overcome the current impasses and delays,” DEM party co-chair Tulay Hatimogullari said in a statement on Tuesday, referring to the meeting at the end of May.
The DEM party co-chair said the imprisoned PKK leader is “working very hard” to advance the “legal basis” of the peace process.
On Friday, a delegation from the DEM party met with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and presented Öcalan’s “proposals” to advance and conclude the peace process, Ronahi reported Friday evening. The statement cited a DEM party source as saying the draft proposal will soon be shared with the public.
“This framework law was also discussed with the AKP party,” Hatimogullari added, referring to Friday’s meeting of the DEM party with Turkey’s ruling party.
“Our delegation conveyed our views to the AKP Party delegation on the need to implement the special law as quickly as possible and the impetus it will give to the process,” she added.
She reaffirmed how “it is important and essential that this law be passed before the closure of Parliament”.
The Turkish Parliament enters its summer recess each year, during which legislative activity is suspended and lawmakers take a break, before resuming their sessions afterwards.
In late May, Öcalan warned against any delays in the legal process of peace talks with Ankara, saying there was “no time to lose.”
In February, Öcalan declared the “second phase” of the peace process, dedicated to democratic integration into the Turkish political system, while the first phase focused on the disarmament of PKK fighters.
Öcalan and the DEM party have repeatedly expressed concern about the lack of concrete measures to establish a political framework to ensure the success of the peace process.
Devlet Bahceli’s far-right Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) also argued earlier in May that Öcalan’s status should be examined and that he should be given an active role to oversee developments in the process.
Dozens of PKK fighters burned their weapons during a symbolic disarmament ceremony in July 1025 in the Kurdistan region’s Sulaimani province. The group announced that it would completely withdraw from Turkish soil later in November of the same year.
The Turkish parliament in February approved a report drawn up by the commission responsible for overseeing the implementation of the process. The report calls for non-violent actions and freedom of expression not to be classified as “terrorism”, and for members who have surrendered their weapons to be reintegrated into society.
