India and Slovakia on Monday expanded their bilateral ties with memorandums of understanding (MoUs) in defence, labor mobility, education, digital technology and other sectors, officially terming their relationship a “comprehensive partnership”.

“Held an excellent meeting with the Prime Minister [ Robert ] Fico. “This is indeed a very special moment for Indo-Slovak friendship,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi said after the bilateral talks in the Slovak capital of Bratislava. The prime minister is here for just over 24 hours – the first visit by an Indian prime minister since the founding of Slovakia in 1993.

“Our discussions focused on cooperation in sectors such as automobiles, railways, advanced manufacturing and green technology. The India-EU Free Trade Agreement will also give impetus to our partnership,” the Prime Minister said. The countries pledged to significantly boost bilateral trade and investment in areas such as the automotive, electronics and advanced manufacturing industries.

The signed memorandum of understanding on labor migration aims to facilitate mobility and exchange of information between the authorities of the two countries, according to the joint statement. Both parties also agreed to conclude a social security agreement in this regard. A memorandum of understanding between the ministries of higher education of the two countries aimed at facilitating academic and institutional ties was also signed. Mr. Modi and Mr. Fico agreed to promote the mobility of students and researchers, particularly in the STEM and human sciences fields.

Defense and security cooperation would be “one of the key pillars” of India-Slovakia relations, the joint statement said. The two sides signed a letter of intent to promote defense cooperation – a move welcomed by Mr. Modi and Mr. Fico in their press statements. Through this framework, governments would seek to collaborate more in the areas of defense technology, defense industrial cooperation, capacity building and research and development (R&D).

The two governments signed a memorandum of understanding on digital technologies to structure their digital cooperation, while committing to deepening their collaboration in the areas of AI, semiconductors, start-ups, etc. They also agreed to explore cooperation in emerging areas, including the Internet of Things and 6G standardization.

The formation of a joint task force on terrorism was agreed by Mr Modi and Mr Fico, with both leaders “strongly” condemning the April 2025 terror attacks in Pahalgam. They agreed to work towards the adoption of the General Convention on International Terrorism (CCIT) within the framework of the United Nations (UN). Both leaders called for action against terrorists, including those on the United Nations Security Council Sanctions Committee (UNSC) 1267 list and sponsors of terrorism.

Both sides reaffirmed their support for multilateralism and called for reform of the UN, including the Security Council, with an increase in the number of permanent and non-permanent seats on the Council. Slovakia continued to support India’s quest for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and “reaffirmed its constructive approach” to India’s membership in the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the joint statement said.

Mr Modi met the CEOs in Bratislava on Monday afternoon and was due to attend a dinner hosted by Slovak President Peter Pellegrini.
