As Khan Sir-Roshan Sir row takes communal color, Bihar politicians step in

The already murky Khan Sir vs Roshan Sir Patna coaching center feud has received a fresh dose of dirt with the entry of political parties into the scene. It is no longer just a matter of commercial rivalry; it is now a battle between Hindus and Muslims.

Ever since the firing outside Faizal Khan’s (Khan Sir) training center, Khan Global Studies (KGS), at Musallahpur Hat in Patna on the night of June 2, claims and counter-claims have multiplied between him and his rival Roshan Anand (Roshan Sir).

As educators scramble to get their share of the Patna coaching pie, worth hundreds of millions of dollars, the legal battle has spilled onto the streets in the form of protests by their students and others.

However, adding a new twist to the fiasco, Roshan’s brother Prince Yadav, another accused in the shooting incident, was found dead in a hotel room in Nepal’s Viratnagar on Monday (June 15). This unexpected development has brought politicians into the arena, and the whole incident has now taken a political turn.

‘Pak link’, other allegations

One of the most prominent political players is former Bihar minister and BJP MP Neeraj Kumar Bablu, who was quick to claim that Khan had a “Pakistan connection”. While Nepali police are yet to determine the cause of Prince Yadav’s death, Bablu said Prince was murdered. He also spotted a big conspiracy and demanded a high-level investigation.

“Faizal Khan (Khan Sir) is a fraudster. He came from Uttar Pradesh to Bihar to cheat students. He might have links with Pakistan and Nepal. This should be investigated by concerned agencies,” the BJP leader said publicly.

Clearly siding with Roshan, Bablu said he was practicing the noble profession of teaching but was arrested for the dismissal from Khan’s coaching center, which should be investigated thoroughly. Bablu’s support came a day after Roshan loudly proclaimed in public that he was “a Sanatani Hindu” and that his religion “does not teach anyone to kill.”

On Monday, after being released on bail, Roshan directly accused Khan of hatching a plot to kill his brother. Again, on Wednesday (June 17), his lawyer Niranjan Kumar Singh said that he would file a murder case against Khan in connection with Prince’s death and also seek a CBI probe into the matter.

Different parties, different claims

This BJP leader is not alone. Several leaders of the NDA and the ruling opposition, including RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha, Bihar minister Ram Kripal Yadav, independent MP Pappu Yadav and former Bihar minister Tej Pratap Yadav, have jumped on the bandwagon.

While Tejashwi, who is Leader of Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, demanded a CBI probe into the entire fiasco, Ram Kripal on Tuesday said the controversy taints the noble profession of teaching and urged Tejashwi in particular not to enter politics. “Tejasjwi Yadav should not make this his political battleground,” he said.

Tejashwi, in a letter to Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, on Monday said a CBI probe should be recommended to reveal the truth. “Only a fair and impartial investigation into the death of Roshan’s brother will clarify things,” he said.

Jha said Prince’s death was sad but the Bihar government would not spare any person found guilty of any crime.

Jan Shakti Dal supremo and Tejashwi’s elder brother Tej Pratap, meanwhile, said Khan should be arrested because “he conspired to assassinate Prince”. Pappu Yadav also claimed that Prince was murdered.

The usual politics of Bihar

A Patna-based political analyst said that the political equations of Bihar, riddled with castes and communities, force politicians to play their usual game. “As Roshan belongs to the powerful OBC Yadav caste, considered loyal to the RJD, it is natural for Tejashwi to demand a CBI probe. Others are trying to play the Yadav card, as well as the Yadav versus Muslim card. The aim is to portray Khan Sir as a simple Muslim and Roshan Sir as a simple Hindu,” the analyst, who did not wish to be named, told The Federal.

What could pose a “hurdle” for politicians, however, is the fact that Khan is revered by an overwhelming majority of Hindu students, who constitute around 80% of his student population. They are seen expressing their respect for “Khan Sir”, refusing to reduce him to “a Muslim”.

Himanshu Kumar, one of his students who passed the Bihar police exam this year, told The Federal that Khan was their favorite teacher. “We don’t care about his caste and religion. What matters to us is his cost-effective courses which are a great gift to students like us who belong to poor families,” he added.

To briefly recap the case, after the shooting at his training center on the night of June 2, Khan accused Roshan of orchestrating the attack. Roshan, who has been running Gyan Bindu, another popular fitness center in the same area, for almost a decade, was arrested and released on bail on Monday (June 15).

However, police apparently discovered through CCTV footage that Khan’s own security guards had fired the shots. One of them reportedly told police during interrogation that he had opened fire at Khan’s request. Police arrested the two guards, who are still in custody, and registered an FIR against Khan.

Although Khan was granted interim protection from arrest, the court also observed that the two teachers should engage in healthy competition rather than resorting to criminal activities.

Amid this fiasco, Chief Minister Choudhary said the state government would improve the standards of education in government schools, which would ultimately lead to the closure of coaching centers.
