Turkey imprisons comedian while awaiting trial for Recep Tayyip Erdogan, jokes about Quran
A Turkish court on Friday jailed comedian Deniz Goktas pending trial on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and religious values, a court document seen by Reuters showed, days after prosecutors opened an investigation into comments he made on stage.
The Istanbul General Prosecutor’s Office announced earlier this week that it had opened an investigation after identifying what it called criminal expressions in content shared by Goktas on social media. Police arrested him at Istanbul airport on Thursday as he returned to Türkiye after a trip abroad.
Prosecutors said the investigation concerns allegations that Goktas insulted religious values during a stand-up show in Istanbul on June 1, during which he made references to Erdogan, the Quran and imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.
Insulting the president is part of the charges against him, Goktas’ lawyer Metin Aslan said in a post on social media.
The performance quickly went viral online and attracted more than nine million views on YouTube as of Friday, with clips widely shared on X/Twitter, Instagram and other social media platforms.
Several members of Erdogan’s ruling AK Party and Erdogan’s advisers criticized Goktas on social media, accusing him of mocking Erdogan and the Quran.
In a statement to police, Goktas denied the accusations, saying his jokes did not constitute an insult to religious values or the Quran, according to Haberturk TV channel. He also said his description of Erdogan as a “dictator” was a political definition and not an insult.
After speculation that he had left Turkey to avoid prosecution, Goktas said on social media earlier this week that he had traveled abroad for vacation and intended to return.
“I intend to spend many more years in Turkey and if a situation requires my presence, I will return on the next flight home,” he wrote.
