Weather emergencies disrupt Trump’s July 4th plans

Thousands of attendees, many of whom waited for hours in searing heat, were told to seek shelter in buildings near the National Mall, including the Museum of African American History and the Ronald Reagan Building. Many appeared reluctant to leave until security officials urged them to evacuate.

As attendees headed toward the exits, jets performed flybys overhead.

Some attendees were as determined as Trump to move forward with the event. Karen Perry of Raleigh, North Carolina, said she passed out earlier in the day from the heat but still planned to attend the festivities.

“They gave me two liters of IV. I said, ‘I’m not leaving here until I see this,'” Perry said.

In the hours before the show began, viewers expected a triple-digit heat index, with several people telling NBC News they had seen others faint or have medical problems.

Richard Doyle, dressed as Uncle Sam, said he had traveled to Washington from Florida for the Fourth of July celebration.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I thought, you know what, why not?” he said inside the Reagan Building.

Doyle said he was “super excited” to attend, but the program ended before he had a chance to participate. He nevertheless remains optimistic about the continuation of the show.

“It’s a little dark, but you know, everyone’s hot and tired,” he said. “But as soon as the festivities start again, it will be an incredible event.”

Brian Ragusa, visiting from California, said that despite the weather problems, “we’re having a great time.”

“Everyone is hot and sometimes a little unhappy because of the heat, but that doesn’t kill the joy,” he said. “No way.”

Seventeen-year-old Conly Jackson of Fayetteville, Arkansas, said she waited about two hours to participate in the program, adding, “I totally understand” that the event would be postponed.

“I think we’re still going to stay and try to make the most of this experience,” she said from inside the Reagan Building. “My mom and my friend are leaving tomorrow, so we still want to be able to see all the fireworks, because I heard they’re supposed to be super big and super amazing.”
