A former MLB catcher is clinging to hope that his missing wife and daughter are still alive in the rubble of a collapsed Venezuelan hotel — after rescuers pulled out the still-living family dog ​​on Friday.

“If my daughter’s little dog shows up, I think they’re there,” Alfonzo told local reporter Mariorin Mendez. “I know my wife and daughter are real fighters.”

He later left the hotel and headed to Estadio Fórum La Guaira to join the rest of the coaching staff of Delfines de La Guaira, the team he manages, and prepare for the 6pm match.

Alfonzo said he last spoke to Patricia a half-hour before the first pitch while she and Eliana were getting ready to go to the game.

“I still don’t know if they left the room,” he said.

The first 7.2 magnitude earthquake was recorded at 6:04 p.m., followed by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake 39 seconds later.

The wives of Delfines footballers Gorkys Hernández and Harold Chirinos were found dead under the rubble of the hotel.

Acting Venezuelan President Delcy Rodriguez said on Friday that the death toll from the earthquakes had risen to 2,595 people.

Alfonzo said he was confident that his wife and daughter would not be added to the death toll in this tragedy.

“Tests were done. They brought in dogs. The dogs pick up signs of life,” said Alfonzo, whose son, Eleazar Jr., 26, was called up to the major leagues by the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday.

The second son, Omar Alfonzo, 22, is in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.

“As I always say, I will not stop until I have them in my hands. I am sure they are alive.”
