India has weathered one of the biggest energy crises with little burden on citizens, according to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Jaipur, July 4: India has managed to overcome one of the world’s biggest energy crises through proactive policies, diversified fuel supply and strong diplomatic relations, with minimal burden on citizens, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday.
The Prime Minister was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a refinery at Pachpadra in Balotra district. He also laid the foundation stone for several development projects.
Modi said India significantly increased its energy imports during the West Asia crisis. “When the crisis started, India was importing energy from around 25-26 countries. During the crisis, we increased this to over 40 countries,” he said, attributing the turnaround to Indian diplomacy.
He said oil companies suffered losses of over Rs 75,000 crore between April and June due to rising global prices, but the government had absorbed the burden.
“We have reduced excise duty by Rs 10 per liter and ensured that the burden on citizens does not increase significantly,” he said.
Rumors were spread and people were incited, but those with malicious intentions did not succeed, Modi said. “Those who wanted to see India fail had even started making predictions. Today, they have to wallow in the depths of despair,” he said.
The prime minister said the country had become the fourth largest refining capacity in the world and was continuing to expand.
He also credited his government’s long-term policies with overcoming global disruptions in fuel and fertilizer supplies caused by the war between Iran and the US-Israeli group.
On a different note, Modi said that the self-respect of an individual or a nation can remain high only when they are self-reliant.
He said BJP governments did not just lay the foundation of projects and abandon them. “We are working day and night to ensure their completion,” he said.
Modi inaugurated the country’s first integrated refinery and petrochemical complex at Pachpadra on Saturday.
The refinery is also the first in Rajasthan.
Modi inaugurated the project by pressing a button remotely after visiting the refinery complex.
The prime minister said work on the refinery remained virtually at a standstill when the Congress was in power in Rajasthan from 2018 to 2023.
