‘King Khan’ drug case revived after officers explain absence in court

Two Fiji Police officers who failed to appear in court in an illegal drug possession case involving Imran Khan have had their arrest warrants quashed after they appeared in the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.

The police officers explained their absence to the court and the resident magistrate accepted their explanations before quashing the arrest warrants.

The court also ordered the state to recharge Khan as soon as possible.

However, an arrest warrant issued against a civil police personnel remains active until she is produced in court.

The development follows Khan’s earlier release after police witnesses failed to come forward, sparking criticism of the Fijian police’s handling of the case.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu accepted the criticism leveled at the organization, saying internal disciplinary measures would continue against those responsible.

He said officers who failed to carry out their lawful duties and showed a lack of respect for the court had undermined public confidence in the police.

“The failure of police officers to carry out their legal duties and the lack of respect for the court further erodes public trust, harming efforts to restore trust between the police and the public,” Commissioner Tudravu said.

He said the Internal Affairs Unit will continue to pursue disciplinary measures to ensure officers are held accountable.

Commissioner Tudravu said the Fiji Police Force was also addressing gaps in service delivery through ongoing training and conferences, while strengthening internal accountability mechanisms to improve conduct and respond to public complaints.
