Gainesville comes together to support Venezuela in the wake of the devastating earthquake

The death toll of more than 2,200 continues to rise following earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24. And the Gainesville community comes together to support the nation.

Tinker Quevedo and his wife, Antonella D’Errico, owners of Tinker Latin Street Food in Gainesville and Newberry, organized a donation drive on June 25, one day after the quake.

“It’s a big thing for just one country, and at the same time we’re frustrated because we would love to be in Venezuela to help our families and friends, and not being there we feel really frustrated. And I think that frustration is felt by everyone who lives here,” Quevedo said.

Ana Aponte, who donated at Tinker Gainesville, has family members in Venezuela. She said that when she learned about the earthquake, she felt very nervous. She added that her husband’s cousin was found dead on Saturday evening.

“From here, we can do nothing but pray, and I believe that prayer is what works miracles,” Aponte said. “There are people who help with financial matters, and there are people who can help from home by praying to God.”

Many other Gainesville community members have stepped up. Bravo Supermarket in Newbury joined the cause on July 1, one week after the first quake.

Elvis Tejada, 64, of the Dominican Republic, a Gainesville resident, works as a front manager at Bravo Supermarket in Newberry. He said the first fundraiser arrived on July 1.

“Right now, the people of Venezuela are going through a huge crisis; they need all kinds of help,” Tejada said.

He said he believes any place experiencing a natural disaster will need time and faith to move forward. But he said Venezuela would recover.

“I hope a lot of people will join the cause, because the need is great,” Tejada said. “The more people support and cooperate, the faster those affected will be able to escape the catastrophic situation they are currently living in. There is a lot of despair, and they are in desperate need of help.”

Puerto Rican-born and Williston resident Yvette Diaz said that ever since the first quake hit, she felt in her heart that she had to do something.

“Even though this is not my country, these people are going through a tough time and need help,” Diaz said. “This is what God has called us to do, to love and help each other.”

She said after attending church last Sunday, she had a “pain in her heart” to do something. She called her pastor and asked if she could set up a fundraiser for her church, Casa del Alvarero, in Williston and Gainesville.

Diaz said she started making posts the same night after getting approval on both sites. She said the donation drive is asking for medicine, food, clothing and “anything that comes from the heart.”

She said she does not yet know where the donations will be sent until the items arrive in Venezuela. She said the most important thing now is to collect items and then find a way to get aid to Venezuela.

“I told my pastor that I would take it upon myself to deliver the donations, whether to Orlando or Tampa or wherever I could take them until the donations reached Venezuela,” Diaz said.

This campaign has ended, but Bravo will continue to accept donations for the foreseeable future. Tinker extended his campaign until July 19.

Tejada has previously received donations to the Global Empowerment Mission in Miami, which has partnered with the We Love Foundation and the nonprofit Venezuela Aid Foundation.
