Why Nigel Farage is resigning as a British MP… to better represent himself

From the headquarters of the anti-immigration Reform UK party, in London, Nigel Farage announced on Tuesday July 7, 2026 that he would resign from his mandate as MP for Clacton (Essex)… to immediately stand again in the same constituency. The politician is accused of not having declared large donations received shortly before his election as deputy in 2024, which raises questions about compliance with the rules governing the financing of parliamentarians. Farage mentioned these accusations in his message and assured that he had “done nothing wrong”. However, it seems that the other major parties will not present a candidate against him, in what is already described as a “media circus” and an “ego project”. Three academics analyze the motivations for this maneuver.

Self-pity and self-obsession

Tim Bale, Professor of Political Science, Queen Mary University of London.

“In what is arguably among the most self-pitying and self-serving political speeches heard since Boris Johnson’s countless attempts to justify himself in 2022, Nigel Farage surprised absolutely no one by calling a parliamentary by-election after resigning his MP seat. He says he wants to face theestablishment during this election by representing himself immediately in order to clear his honor.

Although Farage’s anger at media intrusion was sincere, his recorded video message still seemed a bit manufactured. And I doubt that the public will have much sympathy for a politician who tells us not only that he is immensely rich thanks to all kinds of ancillary activities, but also that he could be even richer if he left Parliament. As for his absurd remarks presenting the United Kingdom as a “broken” – even “communist” – country where “men can no longer wear watches and women can no longer wear jewelry” in the street, they were undoubtedly aimed at an American audience. Finally, his promotion of his investment advice, supposed to bring impressive returns, amounted to opportunistic fraud at its most caricatured. »

“Faragism” in its purest form

Parveen Akhtar, Senior Lecturer in Political Science and International Relations, Aston University.

“The resignation of Nigel Farage from his mandate as MP for Clacton, followed by the announcement of his candidacy for his own succession in order to “let the British people decide” their future rather than “the media” or theestablishmentis probably best interpreted through the prism of faragism. As show my recent worksFaragism is not reduced to the politics of one man: it constitutes a political project which constructs a populist narrative presenting the United Kingdom as a nation hampered by political elites and institutions deaf to the expectations of citizens. In this logic, theestablishment is described as obstructing the expression of the democratic will of the people.

The unfolding events around Farage’s statement perfectly reflect this strategy. At noon, he posted on X: “I will make a statement about my future in public life at 2 p.m. » In the space of two hours, this message had been viewed approximately 4.4 million times, illustrating its unparalleled ability to capture the public’s attention and impose its themes in the political debate.

Rather than letting the accusations against him take center stage, Farage has sought to present this episode as another episode in a wider clash against political and media elites. He has presented himself as a man willing to bear a personal political cost in the name of what he describes as the national interest and his mission to “fix” a Britain he believes is in ruins.

This is a characteristic of Faragism. The political debate is displaced: instead of focusing on the behavior of an individual, it is reconfigured as a broader confrontation between an insurgent movement and a establishment corrupt. In doing so, Farage reinforces the populist opposition between “the people” and those he presents as seeking to deprive the latter of their political legitimacy.

This episode also shows why Reform UK remains so closely associated with the person of Nigel Farage. Although the party has become much more professionalized and structured in recent years, its ability to capture public attention still relies very heavily on Farage’s singular political authority. This is both Reform UK’s greatest strength…and its greatest weakness.

A populist narrative

Lone Sorensen, Associate Professor in Political Communication, University of Leeds.

“Nigel Farage relies on real storytelling and devoted a large part of his speech to shaping his own character, that of a victim. He denounced the constant demonization to which he would be subjected by the press – “the way I was treated” – and presented himself as the personality most attacked by the media in contemporary history. He also spoke of attacks and threats of which he said he was the victim, including a crowd attacking his car.

At the same time, he also portrayed himself as a savior: according to him, if he had not “done what he did”, Brexit would never have happened. By seeking to delegitimize the Labor Party’s position, by pointing out that Andy Burnham is set to become Prime Minister [NDT : le député travailliste est le seul candidat déclaré au poste après la démission de Keir Starmer] without having been elected to this office, Farage sought to install a Manichean narrative pitting the “good guys” against the “bad guys”.

What is particularly interesting is the way in which Farage merges traditional media andestablishment political into a single entity which he presents as partial. He said: “It’s not just the media, it’s also true of other political parties,” as if the media itself constituted a political party. This is a well-identified populist process, illustrated for example by Donald Trump’s famous phrase on “fake news”. Populist leaders have tendency to attack to established media, historical media and, in particular, public service media, while developing their own media ecosystem, which they control more.

By presenting the media as the enemy, any critical article becomes an additional argument in the service of their narrative. Any legal procedure based on the rules of law, or any control exercised by Parliament against them, is then assimilated to a partisan and politically motivated attack.

All this gives the impression of a very calculated strategy, which he has probably tested in the polls and on which he feels on safe ground. He will no doubt continue to present this by-election as a national election in miniature – the people against theestablishment –, like the campaign led by Andy Burnham in the Makerfield by-legislative. »
