Vaisakhi Cricket Cup returns to Edgbaston

Edgbaston hit Bhangra beats as the Club hosted the Vaisakhi Cricket Cup and a cultural celebration to mark the Sikh festival.

More than 50 people took part in a fun softball competition at Edgbaston Cricket Center before enjoying a tour of the stadium.

It is the second edition of the event which aims to introduce more people, especially women and children, to cricket and promote physical and mental well-being.

The event brought people from our local community together for a fun day of cricket, said Simran Riat from Warwickshire Cricket Foundation.

About half of the people returned from our inaugural event last year and we hope that the Vaisakhi Cricket Cup will become a permanent fixture in our calendar.

One of the players said she loved cricket in primary school but has not played since because she suffers from anxiety. This was the first time she had picked up a bat since then. With the support of the coaches and fellow players, she got involved and bowled incredibly well.

That's what the event is all about: inspiring people to play and enjoy cricket. Hopefully it will act as a catalyst for the children and others who attended to continue playing the sport.

Popular Birmingham DJ Will Reed played a set at the event and guests were encouraged to show off their bhangra moves.
